Is our little world about to be changed forever? What happened to that nice little company that produced flawed masterpieces which only us as cognescenti truly appreciated - what happens when that company produces items of such quality and attractiveness that hoi polloi in their thousands buy and use them!?!

Time to get interested in Alpa, or Horseman, or Linhof I think....

Maybe it's back to the FSU's! :D

It's the dawn of a new age of Leica. A magnificent achievement. I wish them every success. I'm sure we all do.

There is this strange idea going around, as the idea behind this thread illustrates, that the M9 sends Leica into the mainstream. I suspect little will change at Leica or in the industry as a result of the M9. DRF's aren't ever going to be mainstream.

Do you really think the hoi polloi are going to run out and spend $10K for a fixed lens digital camera???

Mainstream dont have $7500 (US) for M9 or 21/24 Summilux or $10,000 (US) for a Noct. Leica will never be mainstream anymore than Rolex.

Austerby, you can drive a car and watch tv or browse the internet because plebeyers like me put in our few cents towards r&d and profit for the industry.

You can distinguish yourself from the crowds with the wonderfull and breathtaking images you produce. :p

Kind regards,

Wim

I'm reminded of the last election.
Obama wins and everyone expects the world to change like flipping a light switch.
Well the world did change and.........it stayed the same.
The new Leica ? How do we know yet?
When the number of units shipped is over 10k and the number of units returned for flaws is under 300 (3% can they beat it?). Maybe then we can say this is the new Leica.
I'm optimistic as anyone I hope. But the proof is always..............;)

I agree. Leica is not now mainstream, their product line though is significantly advanced from where it was on Monday. Their target customer has not changed, but they again have products that can woo the hearts and minds of the rest of us that are more directed to what our ideals are. Now Leica has "Leica class" products to go along with their reputation.

Where are the flaws, though? I've never used many Horseman cameras, but I've been impressed with the ones I have used (6x12, Woodman) and with my Horseman 6x12 back; and Frances and I own and use both Alpa (12WA and 12 S/WA) and Linhof (Technika and Technikardan).

Cheers,

R.

Well, I did say thousands rather than hundreds of thousands or millions, but just read what others are saying:

- professional photographers using Leicas :eek:;

- DSLR users using Leicas :eek::eek:;

- middle-class people using Leicas :eek::eek::eek:.

The sky is falling on our heads, I'm telling you.

Clearly we need two things. The first is background checks and a literacy test for photography for those wanting to buy Leicas. That will weed out those nasty smelly masses. Perhaps a test of Greek and Latin too.

The second is higher prices. That will make Leicas much less attractive to the public.

It might be necessary to require that cognoscenti undertake a pilgrimage to the Fatherland to receive their Leica. Those who are unworthy can be shot at the border (with their oversized Nipponese SLRs). Thus shall we protect the world of Wetzlar from the stampeding feet of the hoi polloi.

You must excuse me for now. My tongue needs extracting. It appears to be jammed in my cheek.

Dear Roger

I defer to your knowledge - I'll have to look elsewhere. But even Bristol cars are showing signs of losing their eccentricities...

I, for my part, would like to get my hands on one of these new M9 cameras, if they would not be that pricey (pricey in a way of the relation towards my salary at the moment as an university student with part-time job):D:cool:

Hilarious!
