Leica

Like Roger said, why? Bit of a useless thread if the OP doesn't specify his thoughts as to why on his own thread.

Leica does what Leica do, and that is not medium format film.

well the leica s2 is considered a medium format camera right no?

I would just like to see them make a medium format film camera around the size of an m5

I would love to see Mamiya continuing with the M7ii, in film, perhaps with an update, though it arguably does not need one. Best camera ever. And would love to see Hassy re-introduce the SWC.

Pointless. The money is no longer there. Leica stated they recon (CEO) that film will be finished in 5 years.. My own take is that film will be around a long time. 120 film may indeed go way of the Dodo. i have a Rolleiflex so it is not a happy thought. Leica is in Medium Format with the bargain basement S2. Play with that and a few lenses.
We would like to go back but most folks even here are probably shooting in digital. Personally i love it. Film is different not better, simply different.

Leica has never been medium format camera maker. As the film camera market further shrinking, I see no reason Leica wants to get into medium format film camera market by developing completely new system and lenses.

They now have S2 as digital semi-medium format, which is quite small package compared to other "MF" digitals. Leica has been into offering smaller package for each format. 35mm, 1.33/FF digital, and S2 (not sure what classification this camera is in). I'd rather like to see FF digital in true film M size body, or smaller/cheaper (like that happens!) version of S2.

Want a small RF MF film camera? You can have one today: Mamiya 7/7II. They are real, and they are spectacular. :D

I really want to see Leica make a compact medium format rangefinder film camera..

just saying

Agree, that would be very sweet. Although I'd suggest you look at the GF670, it's very, very nice.

Some will say there is no point, but logically there is no more or less point than Leica making 35mm cameras. The only point is that Leica tend to make really lovely cameras, and it would be good to see them turn their talents to medium format.

yeah.

Love mamiya results. Build quality is ok.

like you said gman the gf670 is nice.

After all if leica did make a medium format film camera at the size of an m5 it would only introduce more leica users.

After all leica is trying to gain new customers.

Time changes its not only about 35mm, barnack model was a game changer not only because it was the first 35mm , also because it was tiny tiny tiny. So why not Leica take on the mf film department and make the tiniest possible mf film camera out there.

If Leica built a medium format camera with the quality of the M film cameras, it would probably cost so much that few people could buy it. And that is few out of the few who even want a new film camera these days, much less an MF film camera. Most new film cameras sold these days are large format cameras, 4x5 and up.

So, what you wish for would be nice, in an abstract sort of way. But it's not going to happen.

The Leica CEO ought to pay a visit to somewhere like yodobashi akihabara where hundreds of people come in and buy film every day and still tell us film will be dead in 5 years... Not in Japan it won't be

I'm sure that $10k would be for the body only, provided it had interchangeable lenses. More likely $15k to $20k with a non-changeable lens, else Leica would have to design and manufacture multiple new lenses that no one will be able to afford to buy.

quite right. Leica's most loyal fans are in japan
