After having used the 35/1.2 Nokton for a while, I realize that I can live with/like the 35mm FoV. Now, I am looking for a compact 35mm f/2 lens for use on a M body. My choices are narrowed down to the following:

* UC Hexanon 35/2 - I don't have a screwmount camera, but this looks like a good lens to have. Is the L-Hexanon similar in performance? I know that the optical formula is different. Also, could anyone post wide-open and f/4 shots on B&W film with this lens? How is the contrast ? I have seen samples on flickr and other threads here, I just want shots which I might have missed. :)
* Canon 35/2 LTM - I know this is reaching cult status. I like the performance of the Canon RF lenses (I used to have a 50/1.5) and look with B&W. Once again, any samples on B&W film with this lens are welcome.
* Summicron pre-ASPH ver 4 /3/2? - No samples needed from this one. And there are numerous review on the net. I would really like to try this one, but ebay prices seem ridiculous. PS: I really love the rectangular hood. :p

Any other lens I might have missed, and should consider? My primary use will be on the M body, and B&W film (PlusX, APX400). I like my negatives to be relatively lower contrast (Yes, I do have additional control in the development process) when compared to negatives from modern ASPH lenses.

I have both lenses, and both are great lenses.
Today and for the first time, I looked through the M3 and the M6 with one type of Cron each. I suspect that the goggled version shows more glare in the VF due to the goggles.

Am I right or is it the M3 VF itself?

I switched the lenses around, and the goggled Cron shows more galre in the VF.

Who has had such an experience?

There are many ingenious features of this camera, including the original design of two lugs and hanging vertically. It is very comfortable and unobtrusive and secure in that position. I recently acquired a new A&A strap especially designed for the M5, but only inasmuch as the width of the nylon fits the lugs. The two strap ends are attached, one to each lug. What works best, however, is a strap that glides freely through the two lugs, so that with a good gripping shoulder pad, the strap can glide down through the lugs as the camera is quickly brought up to the eye. With the great grip of the A&A strap it virtually needs removing from the shoulder to get the camera to the eye. All forum discussions seem to miss this essential feature of the Leitz designers' intention of solid strap lugs, vertical hanging, and the free running strap. I have tried joining the two ends of my new strap together and it gets close, but I suspect leather runs better than the nylon. I am going to look for a second hand leather original, unless someone knows of an alternative that has all the features of the original.

4. Lenses are expensive, so chances are better you'll only own one or two.Three at most. If you are lucky enough to acquire a Leica but you also acquire too many lenses for it—too bad! You lose. Lenses are like women: one main one and maybe one on the side are enough for any real man, as long as they're the right ones for you. Too many and you're either just playing around or busy making yourself and everyone around you unhappy*."
It weights just 60 grams complete with hood and caps. When collapsed, the whole lens protrudes just 4mm from the lens mount. Amazing! This takes the meaning of a pancake lens to a whole new level!!!
This is the man himself, Miyazaki-san of MS Optical R&D at work in his "office". Miyazaki-san is probably the most active 70 year old I've ever met. He showed me a file with about 150 lens he's designed and he also discussed his plans for the next few lenses to go from the drawing board to production. We can look forward to more surprises from him soon!
I just happen to be, surprisingly, the first guy to ask if the seller would break up the lot; the seller gladly obliged.

New to RF. Got 2 months ago my first Leica a M6 TTL with a 'cron 35/2 that I'm really enjoying.

Yesterday I received (bought from the auction site) a tele-elmar 135/f4 (from 1970 but in E+ shape) on my M6 TTL but the focus patch is not changing when I'm turning the focus ring on the lens. I unmounted/mounted several times the lens to be sure that I was doing it correctly, tried different apertures, etc. but no luck.

For me, it seems as if the kens is not "able to communicate" the focus change to the camera. As it seems that the lens as almost not been used at all (as really like new), I imagine that some CLA would need to done on the lens to lubrificate the "mechanical part signaling" the focus change to the camera. Or is it due to a simple incompatibility between the lens and my M6 TTL?

The owner told me that the lens was working fine on a M5; and I do not know anybody around me with a Leica (otherwise I will have been able to try it on another body).

I am just looking for some feedback here to know if it is a common case or not, or if it could be a serious issue with the lens, etc.
I am certainly going to return the lens, but as the lens is in such good condition (outside, glass, baldes, etc.) that I am willing to keep it and sending it for a CLA, but I do not know if a CLA could fix that or not.

Thanks by advance for any help/advice.

Hello All,

This is my first post on this forum, on any forum whatsoever, for that matter.

Hello All,

This is my first post on this forum, on any forum whatsoever, for that matter.

I just bought, and will receive in a week or two, a Leica M3 SS and a Summicron 50mm DR - for what I think is a reasonable price, given the market.

Now this is part of my scheme to switch from digital to film - at least to try film, if not 'switching'. I have a digital SLR and sometimes I am bored with it. I am still a new photographer, in the sense that when I use the DSLR I let it do mostly everything and decide the settings for me - I don't know that much about exposure in a practical sense, except the theory and the basic principles governing the triad ISO-shutter speed-aperture. I read a lot and did some experimenting with my DSLR in manual mode, but somehow, I want to be 'forced' to use full manual settings, including not using a meter (it's so easy getting lazy with an automatic camera!). I feel that this will allow me to learn about picture-taking. The point is to use that M3 and to learn through trial and error. I feel that if I manage it, I'll be better with a DSLR, for one thing. I'll know more, if I have the patience.

Anyway, all this autobiography is meant to give you a sense of what I'm trying to do with the M3 that I don't have yet because I would need some advice from kind souls. I plan to use B&W film, but not sure with which ISO to begin, and which film in particular. It would be mostly for outdoor shots, some indoors.... I'll experiment, but starting with outdoor should be a good idea, don't you think?

Another question would be - do you think I could get away without a meter to start with? I'd like to learn how to evaluate light on my own eventually, it's part of my plan. But should I invest in a meter?

Anyway, I probably come across as a complete amateur in the bad sense, but hey, one's got to start somewhere!

Thanks!

So, why is "focus shift" so serious now?

It seems that with digital, it is a big deal.

Is it because of the ability to get instantaneous results, that you now can determine that your shots are affected by focus shift?

I wouldn't think that a digital sensor made focus shift any worse, just faster to determine.
