Flare in Canon rangefinders

Some Canon cameras rangefinders seem to be prone to flaring. What causes this and can it be fixed?

I'm guessing you're talking about viewfinders, and not a flary lens.

It depends on the Canon rangefinder you're talking about. It seems that Canons that used reflected frame lines are more prone to flare than those that used projected frame lines. The type of silvering used in the rangefinder/viewfinder seems to be a factor too. Cold-tone finders seem to have aged worse than warm-toned finders.

Can it be fixed? A good CLA will probably help, but if it's too far gone, nothing short of a complete re-silvering will help.

Just some general observations on my part. I'm sure others will chime in with other thoughts.

the worst flaring Canon RF viewfinders are the VI, VIT, and P.

cleaning the VF MAY help - usually not - because such a finder finder is usually degraded with age.

no real solution other than transplanting a better finder from a parts camera.

OR using one of the V/VT series and or 7/7s

My P has a very small point of flare in the lower left corner when turned to the light but my 7 has no detectable flare.

Just checked my Vt and haven't been able to get it to flare..
