| Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history! |

I just ordered a M9M from one of our sponsors. The report is that they have only delivered two thus far, and they get one camera a week. I'm number 15 on a list who put down a $1000.00 non-refundable deposit, and perhaps I may get mine sometime in November.
Initial production is said to be only 500 cameras with no word of another batch-yet.

That's great news Cal.. Way to Go!!!!
You didn't just walk into the shallow end of the digital pool, you dove into the deep end head first. Can't wait to see you with that baby around your neck :-)

Jeff,
And now I'm going to get my butt kicked in because I have a very-very steep learning curve ahead. As you know I'm digitally inept. Took me a while to make sure I could make the paypal payment correctly to make the deposit. LOL. I'm really lame.
As far as a new computer (my old titanium Macbook Pro dates back from 2003) I'm confiscating my girlfriend's brand new Macbook under the premise that she can now upgrade her computer. LOL.
Anyways I figure a 28 Cron and a 50 Lux ASPH will be a nice spread, and that the old retro 35/1.8 Nikkor in LTM will be a magic lens on rainy days. Oh the grey scale on that wonderful lens, especially dreamy wide open with the veiling flare at F1.8.
Its wait and see on all that medium format gear I'm hoarding.

Besides a new desktop you might also need a new monitor that accurately displays BW tones
... additional expenses that hit my pocket after I got the M9 and the old 2003 Windows XP PC would not run LR4.1 with only 2 G's of RAM. Just to let you know

Thanks for your response.
The delay in obtaining my Monochrome works in my favor, and this weekend I will be going to the Apple Store to look over future possibilities. I know any monitor will need calibration and that a big screen size is an asset. Any new computer will likely have to be a lap top because I live in a Madhattan one bedroom.
Any helpful insights or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response. The 17 inch is very appealing and was my first thought.

If space is a serious concern, as I can see in 1B in Madhatten ,then a laptop is the only choice, I guess. Otherwise for accurate evaluation and Lightroom use in post processing this is not a good choice. Calibration on a laptop screen is not top notch. Especially the glaring Apple displays are polarizing the folks. You either love it or hate it. Getting a close to 8 G's camera and then not go for a pro display doesn't seem such a good option. Had a cheap Acer display and then switched to a NEC 271W, these are worlds apart.

One can get 'matte' Apple screens on 15" and 17" MBPs.....apple screens are far nicer than the average laptop screen

I work with a matte screen 17" MBP (2.4 GHz i7 w/16 GB). Calibrates to my Epson 3880 easily with a Color Munki. Not a fan of the glossy MBP & iMac screens. I use an iMac at work and vastly prefer the matte screen.

My friend Jeff I think has the NEC. His system has been tweaked and professionally calibrated. If you come to a NYC meet-up you would know he's crazy this way.
I think I might be in trouble with "Woman Factor." LOL. Not sure the girlfriend will appreciate some massive machine (trick computer for my M9M that compares with Jeff's), especially since she is rather stylish, trendy and fashionable.
I use to be just a hill billy from Queens, but when we moved from the typical run down old affordable apartment in Queens into a brand new luxury one bedroom in Madhattan I basically donated all my retro comfy furnishings to the Salvation Army, and was forced to buy all new furniture. Ouch.
Anyways she also has been yelling at me, "I want prints" because she cannot interpete the negatives on a light table like I can. In other words I annoy her greatly with photography already, but she loves me anyways. Anyways imagine trying to develop 60 rolls of film a month in a luxury one bedroom apartment you share with a girlfriend.

The 17" is no longer a current model. There is the 15" with Retina Display and the 13" and 15" with the standard display.

Only 500 have been made, and they are being sent out as desired by Leica. At this stage a second batch hasn't started production, and is yet to be officially confirmed.

Congrats, Cal!
Get an external monitor to go with the 15" Macbook Pro you'll inevitably be purchasing. NECs are nice...
And enjoy! I still need to make it down to NYC and meet up with you guys sometime...

The 17 has been discontinued. I just bought a new 13 to scale down size and weight from my 15 and was discussing my wife's 17 when the sales guy said they're not making the 17 any longer. He said they never sold well.
Want a really nice condition 15" ?

I think I have a creative solution. The NEC is likely in the future. My gal is a techno weenie who is kinda wired even though she is old like me. She has an Air-book for its portability and needs it for teaching, conferences and trainings, but she states that the screen is too small. Anyways its an easy sell to a techno weenie to get a hot rodded computer with a Rentina screen and flash memory.
I'm thinking of using external hard drives to segragate our work, this way the flash memory is best utilized for processing speed.
Also Apple has a one year zero APR program that makes the cash flow easy.
Is the NEC a flat screen? Also I will mention that I have a work area where I could set it up where I won't have complaints (woman factor). I'd like to get a rather large display because I want to print big.
We have guests from all over the world come all the time. We have a great group and lots of talent. Definitely PM me and I'll show you parts of the city that are kinda unihabited.

Thank's for the opportunity and the offer, but the Apple offer solves the cash flow bottleneck.

Keith,
Artist like me live in sin. LOL. Also why would I want to pay more taxes by combining our incomes?
Anyways I'm a lucky guy because Maggie (not her real name, but I'm the only person who call's her by that name) is really low maintenance and she puts up with my snoring and my many other bad habits. Maggie even offered to buy me a M9 when they first became available because I spoiled her so.
The only bad thing is that Maggie does let me go out by myself night shooting anymore after she saw my negatives of these desolate places that I kind of love for their urban decay and moody lonelyness.
We'll get together soon.
