The title is a bit sensational isn't it? Just because someone tried to scam you does not mean everyone is a scammer.

Until there is a way to ban scammers from using computers, I'm afraid that it's part of the Craigslist overhead.

The scammers are so easy to spot on Craigslist that really they are not even a problem. Each ad one places receives that same ad which the OP posted here.

They always say the same thing -- "is the item still available" -- they never seem to know what the item is. And they never have a local phone number.

I just consider it the Nigerian gullible filter...

Actually, Nigerian scams are DESIGNED to be obvious. Why? So that they, the scammers, can identify the truly gullible ones out there to target. Just consider it the Craigslist gullible filter.

I think you may have something there. I do think they pray on the weakest and poorest among us.

The most common scam that seems to work is the "I am sending you a bank check which I already had for another sale, it is a too much money, can you send me change via Western Union, and I will give you $200 for your trouble?"

In the US you can deposit a paper dinner napkin with $5000 written on it, and your bank will show it as available until it does not clear -- so they work in this window.

They only need one person in 10000 to fall for it.

If you send me $50 right away as a PayPal gift, I will tell you through my exclusive service who is and is not a scammer.

In my ads, I state that emails that only have "is your item still available" will be deleted.

It is not worth my time responding to those emails, invariable the follow up email is identical to that of the OP
