I went out the other day with my M3 and a coupla lenses. Gorgeous day. Went with a friend to the park. Nice gardens. Lotsa pictures.

Realized when I got home that I had a few pics to go. (I am a conservative shooter). I decide to experiment and do some double exposures on the last few shots. Realized that the roll kept on going.....

And that I'd probably inadvertently flipped the ->R switch before the day began. No shots on the roll until I futxed with the last few.


What's the idiotic thing you did that killed you to ponder after the fact?

I've never done that, but every other imaginable. There are many ways to F up w/ a film camera so don't feel bad.

The nice thing is you feel so dumb, you won't make the same mistake a 2nd time.

I went on a two week vacation with a DSLR and left the battery charger at home, plugged into the wall, charging the other battery.

As for film camera mistakes, I've made every single one ever imagined: opened the back without rewinding; not loaded the film properly so that it advances; not loading film at all (this one really burned, as they were irreplaceable shots); using the wrong ISO; forgetting what kind of film is in the camera; opening the development tank in the kitchen, with film in it that hadn't been processed yet (that one also had irreplaceable shots); and several more.

Years ago, a friend of mine let his brother borrow his car. His brother set the hand brake when he was done (it was a lever between the two front seats that pulled up). My friend didn't notice the lever was up and drove with the brakes on and ruined the brakes. After that, my friend habitually double and triple checked that the lever was down every time he got in the car (and sometimes even at stop signs).

In the same way, I now double and triple check that the film rewind knob turns whenever I advance the film in a film camera, and always test for tension on the rewind knob whenever I pick up a camera to go take pictures.

Advanced a frame on my F3 and put it in my bag. Took it out later and assumed I had got to the end as I couldn't wind on and thus rewound the film...

I recently opened the camera before rewinding, classic mistake,
also I havent developed any film for some time as I was renovating my kitchen,
so the other day I was going to develop a test film from a newly bought Zeiss Ikoflex,
after loading the film in the tank I proceed to start pouring in the tank and instead of taking the top lid off I screw the complete top off,
and instantly thinking to myself, WTF am I doing, luckily it was just some test shots nothing important, but I still felt like an idiot.

I once poured water into the tank instead of fixer ... would have liked to take a self portrait when opening the tank after the final rinse... (no harm done since the film was washed very well so just another round fixing/washing solved the problem)

Opened the back without rewinding;

Been there. Done that.


Use a bit of film to extract a leader from a 35mm roll. Applied spit, inserted film into cassette, turned the spool a few times on and then pulled.....a little too hard!
I accidentally yanked out at least a yard of unexposed film out of the cassette.

It could've been worse, but it did make me feel stupid.


And last week I handed in an unexposed roll of ektar...... and was surprised that I got a set of empty negatives back from the developers. -_-

Okay...time to fess up on this one...
I thought I had set the ASA on my Nikon F5 to 160 but instead set it to 6400 and shot two rolls of Kodak Portra film...I was using a flash with those rolls and felt something was wrong (not enough flash output) but kept on shooting...

That was before I got my glasses...I can read the little numbers on the screens much better now...

I recently loaded a roll upside-down in the Bronica. Only noticed it when I took out the 'finished' roll. Then proceeded to... do the exact thing again. Cost of doing business I guess. I now make sure to double-check the procedure of loading before I take the film out of the package.

I identify a nice situation, I'm getting close comando-style, feeling like HCB. looking away, preparing myself for THE moment. quickly pacing two steps and bang, bang, bang... three great shots of the inner part of my lens cap.
All my caps are now at home.

Can't tell you how many times I forgot to adjust ISO on a camera or light meter between rolls. I'd like to think this is the most common error next to keeping the lens cap on (which I've never done ... ok once )

We've all been there. Film not attached and therefore not winding on... check. Not changing ISO...check. Lining up unrelated lines in the rangefinder.... check. Double exposure in the absence of interlocks... check. Removing back without replacing dark-slide... check. Changing leaf-shutter lenses without inserting darkslide on non-reflexes... check. Failing to close leaf shutter after focusing on ground-glass... check. Leaving lens-cap on... check. Drink had been taken... check.

Anything that can go wrong, will. Anything that can't, is just waiting for an opportunity. Never mind the Laws of the Medes and Persians, which alter not. This is Sod's Law.

just happen to me last week with my c330 tlr, just realize at frame 4th that the lens cap is still attached, i manage to save the 4th frame, but it is painfull to lost the first 3pictures until now..

as i remember, on my m2 and m3 (all with rewind lever, bot buttton) that once i cock the shutter, the rewind lever will switch back to normal position. In your case, i assume that the rewind lever did move back to normal position, but somehow the film was not pulled properly.. But i know how the pain of loosing what i feel to be great shots..

Not to be a jerk, just curious, but how did you forget the lenscap on your TLR? My Yashica has the double cap -- is the Mamiya one two single caps?
