28mm photographer
Who was that portrait photographer that was famous for shooting with a 28mm, and I think even a 21mm?
I think he was a "portrait" photographer but he may a street photographer who shot portraits too, or something like that. Im not sure. I saw some really nice 28mm photographs from him and I think he shot Leica. I could be wrong about the Leica too.
It is definitely not winogrand or moriyama.

You might be thinking of Jean Loup Sieff. He did a lot of portraits, nudes, fashion etc with 21 and 28mm lenses (lots with M - but also Nikon SLR's). He was a master user of black/white for his work.

Jean-Loup Sieff , Gilden and for me the best ,for portraiture, Antonin Kratochvil.i enjoy his book all the time! Amazing geometry and moments that change the idea of portraits.

Heeeeeyyyy. so thanks I just lost an hour or more looking at jeanloup sieff photographs. he's very good. some are 6x6 but he does use that 28 quite well. I didn't see any portraits that I would have said, Oh that's a 21mm lens.... though no doubt I saw some that are. He's not as good as Irving Penn I don't think; and not as good as Richard Avedon I know. He's got a superb eye and technique and does beautiful work but there is a hint of the adamantly not serious that keeps popping up; by which I mean frivolous, in a went-too-far-down-the-Helmut-Newton-highway sort of way. Not always, but sometimes. Still I spent an hour+ didn't I....

Current day 28mm user is Trent Parke from Magnum. Travelled around Australia for over a year using just the 28mm Elmarit

Lots of great photographers mentioned but I was actually thinking about Jeanloup Sieff.

Ah, I thought for certain at first that you were referring to well-known photographer and conceptual artist JR:

He made a brilliant series of portraits of ethnic minority residents of Paris and its banlieues, printed them up huge, and then plastered them all over the walls in the centre of the city. Then the council workers would come along the next day and pressure-wash them all off, lest the photos offend the bourgeoisie who could afford to live there.
JR is my favourite amongst the 28mm portrait photographers, hands down. |

And with all these comments (and photographers) still the 28mm focal length gets no love... I bet I see more 28mm lenses up for sale than any other focal length

I didn't know Antonin Kratochvil. Visited his web site and find some pics very nice. His shots are very contrasty and lack shadow detail.
They almost look like they could have been made with a Ricoh GRD. Somebody knows more about his technique?

ye I rarely see anyone giving love to the 28mm... dunno why, for me its the perfect companion to the 50 and I love the compact size of the elmarit asph...
kinda good for people who love it, great choice of used lenses.. sometimes for a bargain price 
might give it a try myself if I see all those pictures around |

what's the key to using the focal length well?

Get close to the subject if it is not a portrait. If it's a portrait lessen distortion by keeping the subject in the center. |

its just a wide angle.. dont think there are any rules how to use it.. I like to try different perspectives. and that little thing hasnt got distortion and only slight falloff so I'm using it like every other lens...
it has become my wide standard pretty much for street, landscape and architecture if the 50 is too narrow. love it for the compact size and often head out just having this one on
it kinda forces you to get a little closer. some use the 35 but I preferred the 28 there
very subjective answer, sorry if I cant help you
