I think it'll go for around 5 grand.

The seller has no idea what he's looking at or how to describe it.

Wow. Too bad on the internal condition of the Zunow, but it is a signature flaw.

Recently there have been Zunows offered for sale here (that sold quickly) but I have yet to see any shots from those Zunow 50/1.1 lenses, clean or scratched up.

Is it even worth the price with concerns to optical quality, build quality, handling, etc. or is it just hyped beyond all reasonable pricing?

Why is it worth so much? I've never heard of the company. Just because it's rare, doesn't make it valuable...

It's a quality lens manufacturer from Japan. It's not just rare, its 1.1 from a time when 1.4 was ground breaking.
I'd recommend reading up on zunow, they made some interesting stuff and have a place in the history of optics

Here's an alternative that is known to produce stellar results and is possibly more rare than the Zunow 50/1.1 (and the price shows it...) http://www.ebay.nl/itm/Konica-HEXANO...ht_2430wt_1165

Yes, fully agree.

The Zunow is a rare snapshot in history.

That sale was just silly. A guy over on getdpi can't sell the 50mm limited for $2300, it is just as good as the 60 - except on a screw mount camera. But then I see people waiting in line to buy the "hyperprime" .95 for $5000, so nothing should surprise!

The Zunows are very cool...
