Filter for 24mm f/2.8 Elmarit?

How well will a UV filter work on the Leica 24mm Elmarit f/2.8 ASPH? Should I invest in a filter, or just depend on the hood for protection?

I use one with mine for those occasions when I shoot without the hood, but the hood is substantial enough that you could safely manage without one unless you're likely to have salt spray blow onto the front element.

As an M8 owner, I'm sort of forced to use a filter. While the hood is quite large, it feels vulnerable not having something in front of that front element, especially if I am shooting outdoors.
