Photogs / Photo Exhibits This is the place to discuss a particular Photographer (work, style, life, whatever), as well as to post Gallery and Museum Photo Exhibitions and your own impressions of them. As we march on in this new digital world, it is often too easy to forget about the visual importance of the photographic print, as well as their financial importance to the photographer. It is also interesting to remember that some guy named Gene Smith shot with lenses that many lens test reading "never had a picture published in their life" amateurs would turn up their their noses at, as being "unacceptable."

John Mayer and Leicas

Looks like John Mayer got a new old stock M4 and 50 cron...

I know he's used an M9 for a while now and has posted some photos from it on his blog in the past...

Oh, so that's what I've been doing wrong.....

I really like John Mayer - I used to follow his blog and his photos that he posted were quite good. I'm glad he's getting into film.

edit: he also drive a land rover defender... Great taste!

I was reading:

"It was daunting at first but I’ve been practicing guessing shutter speed/aperture on a digital M9 and seeing how close I get. I consider myself experienced enough to bring only this camera with me now."

How did that guy get experienced in the effect of different developers / developing techniques on different film emulsions and exposures based on using a digital Leica M9 ?

Good for him, certainly he makes enough money to have the latest and greatest cameras and other tools/gadgets. He sounds no different then a lot of folks on photography blogs, experimenting, with the idea of becoming a better photographer.

It has nothing to do with developing. He probably won't do it himself anyway. He's talking strictly about exposure.

Yes but exposure of film depends a lot on the choice of the developing tools ... film exposure, is a relative variable and so are film speeds.

Hey I like it when a celebrity hawks our world. It makes the film manufacturers want to make more film. Good for us.

I think he'll soon learn (among many other things) that f/2 and 1/60 won't cut it for "most indoor situations"

I really want to dislike Mayer but the more I hear about him, he sounds like a really cool guy.

I still won't listen to his music though.

That M4 and Summicron 50mm is gorgeous. Mayer has very good taste in cameras and lenses.

Actually his new cd 'born and raised' is really quite good, and I'm not a popular music fan at all. Very honest and universally enjoyable.

Never impressed by me acing your tests

Don't know anything about him or his personal life. However, I quite like his music and his choice of photographic equipment. He's also as entitled to be wrong about the technicalities of exposure / film processing as anyone. Fair play to the bloke; anyone who promotes film in a positive way is okay with me.....

Where does he blog? I'd be curious to see his shots.
