| Photogs / Photo Exhibits This is the place to discuss a particular Photographer (work, style, life, whatever), as well as to post Gallery and Museum Photo Exhibitions and your own impressions of them. As we march on in this new digital world, it is often too easy to forget about the visual importance of the photographic print, as well as their financial importance to the photographer. It is also interesting to remember that some guy named Gene Smith shot with lenses that many lens test reading "never had a picture published in their life" amateurs would turn up their their noses at, as being "unacceptable." |

I guess people haven't heard of him -- singer/songwriter. Doesn't do anything for me, personally.

Isn't he from your neck of the woods?
To each his own, musically; I happen to like most of his work. More importantly, as some have mentioned already, is the fact that it helps to have someone famous beating the drum for film.

I'm sure she's moved onto other things... old photo I would assume. You are safe (though I doubt you really care what others think about something as regular as a camera).

He's a fun guy. I had to photograph him a few years ago, and he was very playful during the concert. Got into a staring contest with me at one point.
and the shot that ran in the newspaper.
It was after the show that I learned he was a photographer. It was nice to have some interaction while shooting. A lot of those bigger musical acts are pains in the butt to shoot.

I met him at Atlanta Museum of Art before he hit it big. He was still a nobody. I watched him play and was amazed at his talent and how well he play the guitar. It was just him a guitar and a microphone. I bought one of his CDs.
Once he hit it big I had to dig out the CD and make sure it was the same guy.

It would be nice if he started posting in the 'Ex Girlfriends' thread.
Somehow, I doubt it will happen.

the guy can play.
His records since and including Continuum have been pretty listanable from a guy perspective, before they were kind of chick music. He released a dvd of a live concert, very impressive.
I mean, he's not Leo Kottke but this guy would play the local club guys under the table and boy do they hate it. Mayer attracts the haters in a big way.
If I could give the guy a piece of advice though, it would be to just not say anything. If a question doesnt relate to the album, don't answer it. I appreciate that the guy has real opinions and is a deeper human being than so many pop figures appear to be, but he's really hurting himself in the court of public opinion.
BTW, M4 + DR cron and sunny 16? That's serious RFFer territory right there. Now he just needs to replace those two rocks with a vintage Super reverb.

since no one has posted any songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKpLtHw7IKQ
btw as someone who honestly loves Jimi Hendrix, I respect the skills of any player who can play his songs and sing them at the same time.
btw 2 : he said this on his blog :

from an intellectual standpoint, this guy is miles ahead of most photographers IMO. too many people want to be artists but theyre too scared to gamble.

Right, he's from Connecticut also, though downstate toward New York. I dunno, I like singers to have better diction, I guess. Seems to also "kiss and tell," which is tacky. (But then, if I dated the women he has, I'd probably be telling everyone too.)
But I agree -- if he's into film, then he can't be all bad. But if he's a Yankees fan, then I might have to modify that last sentence....

If you ever saw him play in person like I did. I don't really like that type music. I am more of a old school rocker, but the kid can certainly bang on a guitar.

I saw a couple of posts that were snobbish, but for the most part many people were positive.
Edit. Semi-ironic that a mean post is posted right before mine. Oh well.

It's cute how all these bitter old folks who never made anything out of their lives feel better about themselves when posting "Who's John Mayer" anonymously on a forum message board. I wonder how it is to live with such bitterness. Grown-ass men/women...
The guy got a nice Leica and is popping his 2c about what he thinks about the act of film photography, he didn't exactly piss on your leicaphile-bonfire-kumbaya did he?
Just like back_alley, things like these that turn a lot of people off from RFF. :-/ No wonder a lot of the old "greats" of the forum like Brian Sweeny (I think that was his name) left looooooooong ago.

I tend to think it is the other way round, at least for me. "He must be famous therefore he must know / do anything better than we"
If he starts posting some of his work here at RFF, for my part I would be happy to see it.

He plays better than DM in my opinion with his live music being more complex and freestyle.
He is a good musician really, out shadowed by his own fame apparently.
I think only the people who really listen to his music can appreciate it. Like any music really, If you haven't heard it you probably do not have a clue.
What is the ex girlfriends thread by the way?

Seems like a trend that is getting worse. It amazes me that people would click on a thread titled "John Mayer and Leicas" and then post "Who is John Mayer?" or comparing him to a Dave Matthews wanna-be who went pro and then admitting not knowing his music at all. Both ignorant and arrogant statements. It appears he has good taste in music, watches, cars, women and cameras. He is also talented, which anyone could see if they watched either of the clips posted to this thread, and was compared to Eric Clapton during the early part of his career. If you can't give him credit for his musical talent, then say something positive about his choice in photography, or more specifically, rangefinder gear. More importantly, remember what mom always said. "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all."

Amen. There seems to be a lot of pent-up bitterness all over the web, but it's creeping into the forum increasingly. At least that's from what i can tell--but don't trust me, I don't own a Noctilux

Yes but Seal brought it on himself with his 'suffer no fools' commentary. (But that actually was on another forum, and it crossed over into others.)
We need more threads about RFF celebs and their Leicas. Oh, we already have one!

Always enjoyed John Mayer, a hell of talented guitar player and performer. Enjoy his playing at Crossroads with Eric Clapton. (you can do a search and find some UTube materail if interested) He has demonstrated he can play pop, soft rock, rock, country, and the blues.
Like cameras . . . . .
. . . . . different horses for courses.
