Hello Canon RF owners, I am trying to find the Canon 0.95 lens converted to LTM (correction: "M mount") with little luck. A reliable collector has offered to sell me his Canon 7 + the 0.95 lens in Canon bayonet mount for $850, the gear is in v.good condition. I plan to have the lens converted pending my impressions of the Canon 7 body. Is $850 a good deal for the kit? I don't have much experience buying Canon RF gear, hence the question. Thanks!

That's an excellent deal. I bought a very clean 7 + 0.95 last June for about $1100. Lately, the 0.95 lens alone goes for about $900 - $1000.

Snap it up.

I would recommend that you buy the camera and lens for $850, it is a great deal, as previous poster mentioned.

Convert the lens to LTM? I believe that the reason that Canon made the 0.95 in a bayonet mount to begin with is because a 39mm thread mount could not support the weight of this lens, about 605 grams (almost twice as heavy as the 50/1.2, no light-weight itself at 322 grams)

I have heard of folks converting the lens to leica M-mount, but never to LTM.

Thanks a bunch for your advice - I had a feeling it was a pretty decent deal but not completely sure. Btw, I meant to say convert to M-mount, not LTM (of course) - I had the Canon 50/1.2 on my mind as well when writing my post.

You haven't bought it yet? What are you waiting for?
Hey, I don't buy *every* piece of cool RF gear that I find, even though I'd want to :)

Well, maybe you don't buy it right away, but sooner or later it'll get to you.
:p
It used to be just an expensive habit, now I think I might need help....

The Bad Boys are finally home

The Bad Boys are finally home

Here they are, finally arrived today. Amazingly, the Canon 7 meter appears to be spot on, at least in moderate to bright daylight.

Wow. Those are two very impressive pieces of glass! I think you will enjoy night photos now, if you did not before.

The meter on my 7 also works pretty well in daylight conditions, but the low range setting is not so reliable, which may be an inherent limitation w/ these selenium meters.

Nice looking kit.... the 0.95 is an impressive little item, is it not???

I would give the 7 a real workout, and remember that the 7s is also available, and would eliminate some problems. Those would involve the lack of accessory clip, big meter window that intrudes on proper hold, and the brightness of the VF. At the price paid, you can sell the 7 and still have the lens for an advantageous price. The 7s is usually available for much less than any of the M's, and is a VERY nice shooter.

The other big item to me, as a collector, is that the conversion is destructive, and there is no going back to the Canon mount. MANY of these lenses have been converted, as this was something that has been done since the lens was first announced. There was a large following among photojournalists soon after, and evidently quite a few lenses had various types of conversions performed. For all the bad press that it received, it was very popular as a TV lens, which was why Canon produced the seperate version with no RF focusing. It was also used in some movies, which use the same mount as the TV versions. Now, with the emergence of digital, it seems a new wave of conversions is taking place, further reducing the supply of available lenses.

Meanwhile, enjoy the lens, and use it for what itis best at... capturing light like nothing else available anywhere near its price.

Harry

I've had a couple of Canon 7 bodies, and the meter was surprisingly accurate in low light. In bright light, it registered on the low side, leading to overexposed images.

The biggest problem was reading the small f-numbers from the meter (with presbyopia).

Wow what a score! I picked up my 7 and 0.95 for $1050 almost a year ago I think it was. Good for you, it looks to be in fantastic shape, too. Now show us some photos! :D

Thanks everyone for your advice and feedback. I plan to give the 50/0.95 a workout on the Canon 7 body before I finalize my decision on converting it, especially since I love the look of the 50/1.2 on the RD1 where the 0.95 would end up mounted most of the time, I think.

>kuzano, of course I want opinions – those helped me decide on the purchase - but see nothing wrong with bragging ;)

I can strongly recommend Steve Serota to do the conversion to M-mount. He used my lens as a "guinea pig" to learn how to convert them, and he did a really nice job machining it, with an M-mount that I supplied. He's half the price of the others and fast.

This is his email to me concerning doing new work:

[email protected]

I would certainly appreciate any recommendations that you would give. Now that I have worked out the details I can complete the conversion promptly. Here is the pricing schedule that I think is fair:

With customer supplied mount
Standard camera version.....................$140.00
TV camera version...........................$170.00
Above prices include helicoid overhaul and cleaning of optical elements.

If I supply the mount add $60.00.

PS: He's also fast and very reasonable on very careful Contax and Kiev CLA's. None of this Henry Scherer two year wait nonsense.

Thanks! I emailed him wrt price and schedule. I normally send gear to DAG and love his work but he seems to get so busy sometimes, it's nice to have options.
