The last batch, Noctilux - Collector Edition - $16,000

I know many companies have their own museums, to house and display their company's heritage, but I don't think many actually manufacture their own museum pieces.

Where else do they get the stuff for their own museum...if they didn't make it? Display a different company products and history?

Ah sorry, that was supposed to be a funny. I see now

I guess the humor wasn't self-evident.

I meant that most companies simply go about their business and make products. Should time and fate determine that a particular product is noteworthy enough to be exhibited in a museum, then off it goes. Porsche does a nice job of this.

But packing a product in its own mausoleum seems, um, silly at best.

No I know, I just have sand in my vagina....:)

I think it's silly too. But if people buy it then good for leica for thinking of another way to part a fool and his $$

Might take the lens out and mount it on an m3 and then remove the internal holder thingy and put my cheroots in the humidor lolz! Then take a picture of myself (with noctilux mounted m3) in the dark smoking a Burmese cheroot sparking away in the mirror posing with the humidor. Then sell the noctilux and use the money from the sale to make a really big print and buy more film and chemistry and possibly more cigars and smoke stuff. Now if only I had that kind of money.

I like the tassel on the key. Good for shooing flies.

This kind of collectormania excess is nothing compared with the high end watch market.

To hell with it...

If Leica made 100 of these ridiculous things and all 100 got sold at asking (or more), then the market for this particular product could obviously bear this price.

If Leica is in business to make money (and stay in business), then mission accomplished with this one. On top of whatever the normal markup is on the already $6000US lens, how much would the actual cost of the $10k premium for the French humidor with the fly fishing lure key fob have possibly been?

The only downside to this I can see is that it sets (even more of) a precident that Leica makes stuff for rich collectors and not practicing photographers that'll use it in the field.

Exactly.

If this is just one last cashing in on the backs of collectors, then fine. Particularly if it generates the money necessary to make improvements to the firm's digital offerings. I'd bet there are way more photographers looking for a high-quality, compact digital camera than there are collectors looking for another gee-gaw for the shelf. Leica needs to concentrate on the former and ignore the latter for awhile.

These particular Summilux lenses take better photos. Women come out extra beautiful. Men come out handsome and muscular. Even I come out great looking. This lens is that great.

How many cameras must be sold to make 1,000,000 Euro profit?
In lens category, only 100 pieces. As long as the buyers are willing to pay, it does make sense.

Kris.

I have been reading this thread, and frankly I will not be posting any photos of either of the two that I ordered to resell. I was not too crazy about removing them from their packaging, but I figured I might open one of them to photograph for the RFF.

What's there to see? It's a Noctilux in a fancy coffin, right?

And honestly, "coffin" is more the correct word than any terminology Leica is using to sell it. If any of these lenses are ever mounted to a camera and taken out in daylight, it'd be a miracle on par with the resurrection.

A humidity controlled coffin!! I want one of those (when the time is right of course). Walt Disney and I will be ready to be bought back to life in near mint condition.

Don't you see what Leica is doing? They are conditioning you for the box of their new LEICA cigar line that will be coming out after Photokina. Each cigar wrapped with an elegant wide band with their Leica trademark.

Right, but too expensive to actually smoke except for the elite super-wealthy!

John

we have to accept that there are two groups who buys products from Leica. Posting thread about collector items has nothing to do with photography here. Why waste time for ridiculous comments? :)

Move thread to "collectors" section or simply skip it due off topic :)

Will we discuss about americans economy, how much they cannot afford? more relevant topic?

I keep some small bits and pieces such as spare batteries, cable release, a lens hood... in an old cigar box too.

Mine is probably unique, but there's 100 of these.
