Why are you still using your M8?

I thought it would be interesting to read why Leica M8 owners still use their cameras despite the M9, M, and MM. I have a few reasons myself. For me, I tested the M9 3 times and I actually prefer the M8 for what appears to be sharper files and great tonal range for Black and White. Economics are another factor. I just can't shell out $7-8k right now. I print mostly black and white on 17"x27" from a roll of Exhibition Fiber in my Epson 3800 and everyone thinks the prints are stunning! To me, I see little advantage to blow more $$$$. The crop factor is fine with me. Not as bad as APS C or Micro 4/3. Almost full frame! I also like the black chrome finish for durability. Noise is ok as long as I keep it at iso 640. Having 1/8000 is nice too with fast lenses outside. Also, even though I have the correction filters for IR, I hardly use them. Color looks great to me and B&W is incredible.

I have the M8.2. My reasons are similar. The M8.2 produces very sharp pictures with great rich color. I like the idea of the Sapphire glass LCD panel. The M8.2 has framelines sized for 2 meters and greater working distance, and almost everything I shoot is at least 2 meters away. The only drawback is the crop factor. But since it is only 1.33, that is not so bad. Since I like to shoot wide, I just picked up a 15mm CV, giving me a 20mm equivalent, and I'm good to go. Besides, it has framelines for my 24mm ASPH, 28mm Summicron, and 35mm Summilux ASPH, three of my best lenses. :)

...but when I decided to sell off my DSLR kit, I found I didn't want to part with the E-1. Why? Because even if I use it only rarely, I like it and I like the images it makes. And it continues to work perfectly, at almost ten years old.

Buying, selling, using, liking... cameras is not an entirely rational thing. Accept that and don't bother trying to find justifications or rationales. Enjoy what you like and make your photos with it. Buy what you want when you can afford to. Be happy. :)

Well said. And it certainly applies to any make or style of camera, not just the M8/M9. My "best" camera is a Pentax K20D but I still enjoy shooting with a K100D. The K20D produces images that are generally sharper and more clear than what I can get from the K100D but the latter still makes pictures that have a very special look to them, especially when using some of my "alternate" lenses.

Were I an M8 shooter I'd be hanging on to it mainly because I couldn't afford the jump up to an M9...

Well I'm not, I sold it to upgrade to an M9 or ME. Still waiting for a good deal, but second hand prices are much more reasonable now.

Because...

... it's the only digital M-Leica that comes at a somewhat decent price.
... it works perfectly with my CV and older Leica lenses.
... it's the perfect companion for my NEX-7.
... it has gorgeous looks with it's black top.
... I wouldn't know what I would need an M9 for. Or any other M, seriously.

A nice M setup would be:
M8 for IR
M9 for color
MP for B&W

Haven't owned the Monochrom, so I can't say with authority - does it give the M8 a run for the IR money?
IR is possible on the MM, but only just and the shorter IR wavelengths only, more like very deep red. The M8 is better, however the MM gives your MP a run for the money in B&W...:p

i just sold my 8.2 for 2K on ebay. I am shipping it out tomorrow. I do have a slight emptiness because I enjoyed the M8, and I agree that the images it took were very nice.

I have since bought an M9P to replace it, but I feel the downsides are the frame lines, not as accurate as the M8.2, and the added length for the processor to churn out images. I just bought a faster SD card and should hopefully alleviate the latter, if at least by a little bit.

I am going to miss it, but I have been wanting full frame for so long on my digital rangefinder system.

I would have been still shooting my M8, but it was starting to develop niggling failures. One of the LED segments had failed, so the shutter speed display was a bit wonky and annoying. And I recall the rangefinder lever arm froze up in the cold. A trip to New Jersey fixed that up.

I have an M9 now. Never looked back since. Glad to be rid of the UV/IR filters.

Oh, hold on, the original thread was why still shoot an M8.

Oops

Hmmm well lets see, it shoots B&W from RAW beautifully, its a joy to use the VF and RF, it takes all my LTM lenses and since I have an Amedeo adapter also my Nikon RF and Contax RF glass. With Lightroom the color is also excellent. I imagine there are better digi's out there but honestly I don't need them.

PS I am not thrilled with the UV/IR filter thingie though.

Seems like a low price for a M8.2... what happened? EDIT: didn't realize that is the going rate now and tha regular M8s sell for as low as $1500. I guess they needed to be recalibrated vs. used M9 prices.

it IS too low.... if you look through ebay 'completed listings'...only the last couple of days they have sold for $2k. prior to that ALL of the M8.2s have sold for $2500+. In the classifieds here, $2500. Whoever paid $2k for an M8.2 got a great deal.

the M8 won't go much lower....pretty stable in the $1700 to $2100 area....has been like this since July when i was shopping them.

Sorry, I still can't warm up to digital B&W when compared to film!
(though the Monochrom shots I have seen truly blow away other digitals).

At around $2000 the 8.2 seems like a decent deal - but it's even more tempting to grab an M8 for about $1500. It would make a good IR camera.

I have 3 M8's and I use at least one of them every month for a week at a time. Also have M9 which I prefer however there is something about the M8 that draws me to them. For the money IMHO there is not a better deal.

I admit it is low, but I got the M8.2 at a decent price when I bought it used about a year ago. So it wasn't really too much of a loss. Plus it was definitely better than what the local camera shops here wanted to pay for it...roughly 1200.

You didn't do that bad for $2k; others have closed in that range (even from dealers). But your camera does look as nice as they come!

And I see your sale was a straight auction and you started at a pretty low opening bid, so you let the market decide the price, so it doesn't make sense to say the price was too low! Others will sell in that range, and yet others will sell for more. You may had gotten more by not starting it on Thanksgiving and finishing on the holiday weekend.

I've noticed recently that it is starting to become a buyers market again. Many desirable items cheaper than a year ago.

I agree, it has been tough to sell lately. Premium priced items - especially bodies - seem to languish.

I was offered a M8 for € 1500,- from a guy that wanted desperately to scrap the money together for a M9. I thought: What the hell, another M body in the bag. As I am shooting mostly film, for me it was like a polaroid camera. Set at ISO 650 it gives pretty good "preview" how my 400 iso (RPX 400 or Eastman 5222) negatives will be looking like. It is also very scratched and abused so nobody is trying to buy it from me... It´s there, maybe I am going to use it "seriously" some day...

Hard times and lower prices

Hard times and lower prices

Yeh, I have noticed cheaper prices too. Real estate still sucks too. And the clowns in Washington aka Fiscal Cliff plus geopolitical instability . I can go on and on. Maybe some day soon I will be able to trade my M8 for a loaf of bread!

I just listed an M8.2 here for $2500 which I thought was fair considering it was just CLA'd by Leica, N.J. No interest at that price. I'm actually relieved. Going to keep using it, eventually alongside an M9P.
