Liam doesn't look all that much like his avatar. He has a beard now. In the avatar, it looks a bit like Toby McGuire. In reality, he has a thinner face.

Aww... I guess I'll need to drink more. Thanks for introducing me to Fat Tire beer btw... they had it on tap a few places we went last week. Yum.

Jeremy does indeed look like his avatar. It's almost creepy. ;)

Looking forward to the 24th.

Just a bump, to keep this on everyone's radar.

This is a week from this Saturday, so reserve time on your calendars!

I had the film developed locally & scanned, and the scans look horrible. I don't know why I thought the CVS lab would do a good job scanning them. They were way late too, it took them overnight, and half of the next day for their 1 hour service. There was also dust on the negs when they printed & scanned them, so it's all garbage except that the negs look to have been developed properly.

I'm putting the finishing touches on the bathroom darkroom; just figuring out how to seal the edges of the door, and decideding whether I need a shelf for the enlarger, or if I can put it right on the toilet seat, hehehe.

See you guys soon.

Use tin foil, it is cheap and light-proof. I would take a piece (about 24 inches) fold it in half the long way then in half again. Use so low tac tape, like masking tape, and seal up around the door frame. Comes off easily and is really cheap. Also at any home center type store they sell PVC pluming pipe connectors, they are about 4 inches in diameter and about 5 inches long. 4 of them on each corner of the vanity (high enough to be taller than the faucet) will hold a piece of MDF, laminated particle board or the enlarger base directly. As they are mass produced they are all the exact same size, and I just do a quick double check with a level and use paper or cardboard to even out if needed. Total cost about $5.00.

Thanks wpb, I'll keep that in mind. I asked over in the printing forum, and there are a lot of ideas there too. (one of them is to hang a couple of dark sheets over the outside of the door.

What time shall we meet? Where?

What time shall we meet? Where?

I'm suggesting around 10 AM at Central Camera.

Everyone?

Hi guys, sorry to post something off topic but I was looking for people to get info from who are from the Chicago area.

I will be in Chicago the first week of May and will be staying near the Northwestern University area (I forget the street). I need help on the following:

1. Where can I buy film (black and white mostly but I plan to shoot color as well)

2. Where do you recommend that I go to do street photography?

Thanks a lot.

Nick

Hi Nick,

Go to Google Maps and search for Wolf Camera near that location. The big camera shops are not really in that area. (Central, Helix, Calumet)

If you feel like taking a walk a mile or two south, Central Camera is my favorite, it is at 232 S Wabash, one block West of Michigan Ave, just north of Jackson.

Walk down Michicagan Ave, and there are a lot of opportunities for an out-of-towner. Grant Park, Millenium Park, Watertower, Art Institute, etc. A little further south, right on the lake is Aquarium, Field Museum, and Soldier Field.

That will occupy you for at least a few days.

The University of Chicago campus is one of my favorite places in the city. It's further south, in Hyde Park and has GREAT architecture. I wouldn't go there at night though. ;)

Chinatown is also interesting, there's a CTA train that goes right there, but I forget which line it is.

Outside of Chicago, there is NOTHING going on for at least 50-100 miles in any direction. The landscape here is boring, unless you like subdivisions or cornfields.

Consider going to your local Borders or Barnes & Noble and buying a Chicago fast map and/or travel guide to really do it right. Definitely get the FastMap though. It's an easy city to navigate, as it is based on a grid, with only a few diagonal streets. Renting a bicycle would be a good way to see things; you could ride the bike path right along Lake Michigan.

Is it the Downtown campus or up in Evanston? Big difference. Rich in street area, evanston, has its own feel, much smaller, different from the big city.

Where are you going to be and for how long? What times do you have free and I can point you to stuff perhaps.

Central Camera at 10 AM? That's a great idea. :D I'll walk in with my green bag full of Leicas, and probably one around my neck. I need negative archival pages and I needed to go there anyway.

Then, in case I arrive late, where to? Borders by the Gene Siskel Ctr? How long would you guys hang out there?

Let's bump this thread again! :)

Weather should be decent... I was considering walking north from Central to the gallery district. See what Catherine Edelman has up. I like that part of town anyway.

Thanks Jeremy and Bill! Central Camera sounds interesting. I'll be staying near the downtown Northwestern University Campus. I plan to see it and the University of Chicago campus.

We probably won't wait, as we'll have no idea if someone just crapped out altogether. However, we'll probably be there for at least half an hour.

If you arrive later than that, give me a call on my cell, and we'll try to meet up. (I PM'd it to you)

I'll do my best to get there on time. I need to buy some negative archival sheets so I'm glad we'll meet there.

And, then, from Central Camera where to? Just wondering... my wife would like to go to Hyde Park, to visit the Coop Bookstore, but that's another matter.

See you then! :)

Inclement Weather Plan?

Inclement Weather Plan?

Guys:

Here is the forecast for the Loop:

Showers in the morning will become a steadier rain in the afternoon with a rumble of thunder possible. High 59F. Winds NE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Rainfall around a quarter of an inch.
Saturday night:
Scattered thunderstorms in the evening, then variable clouds overnight with more showers at times. Low around 50F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

Not sure I'll come out this time, as I was hoping to get a bunch of pictures...Looks like I'd spend more time trying to keep my M's dry.

AJ

I'd take the weather forecast with a big grain of salt. We were told to stay dry today because the storms were coming... and, while it hasn't been too dry, there hasn't been any storm.

However, I'll take a peek at the sky tomorrow. :)

meh only a 70% chance, I'll head down anyway. It's pretty easy for me.

Central at 10, then walking north. I'll stop by borders around 11:30. If I see anyone - great. Otherwise, I'll see you all next get together.
