MS Optics on Film
 
I have this sneaking suspicion that a few RFF members are using their MS Optics lenses on film. I thought we might dedicate a thread to sharing the photographs we make with these silly lenses. Please list the lens and film used.

I've been shooting my 35/3.5 Perar for a few weeks, but my film backlog is, well, sizeable. So I'll be sharing soon. :angel:

been using sonnetar for years ever since it came out

have 2 apoqualia .. one for backup

shot > 50 perhaps almost 100 rolls with msoptics

beautiful lens esp the apoqualia

I use my 28mm triplet as a second wide angle lens on my Leica CL. The whole viewfinder is more or less equivalent to the 28mm view.

35mm f/3.5 Perar, on TMX pushed 2 stops:



Can't say I like the 35/1.4 at all from the pics above. The Perar is a great lens to fit my M6 in a small pocket. That and an Elmar 50/3.5 is about as small a kit as you can get.

Here's a few from the archives, snapped back in early 2012. One thing that made quite an impression on me during my brief ownership of a little Perar 28mm F4 was its, ummmmm, unique flare control (or lack thereof :rolleyes:).

Mad genius Miyazaki-san, the man behind MS Optics, snapped by me on September 3rd, 2010 - the day I first met him. I'd dropped by to get an S-mount W-Nikkor 35/1.8 he'd just converted to M-mount for me adjusted. He had just finished assembling his first Perar 35mm 3.5 on that bench right there when I walked in, and he handed it to me to try. This pic was taken with that lens on an Epson RD-1s. Yes yes, digital, and this is a film photo thread, but since its a pic of the man himself I'm sure you can make an exception ;)

I took that Perar home that day without paying for it. Miyazaki-san said I could wire the money to him later if I liked it, or just send it back if I didn't.

Interestingly, he practically begged me to become a dealer for him that day. I declined, but his offer certainly surprised me, as one particular dealer at the time seemed to think he had an exclusive arrangement with Miyazaki-san. Something must have gotten lost in translation between them as Miyazaki-san certainly didn't think so, and he was taking on new dealers left, right, and center soon after :rolleyes:

I'd like his MS Optics 28mm f/2 lens, but it's a bit pricier than I want to spend for another 28mm lens.

Thanks for posting these shots, Honestly, I am having difficulty seeing the attraction to lenses that, apparently, give the Holga like bad image quality I see in most of the photos, but to each their own. Why not just buy a Holga? The occasional 3-D effect is cool. I see that in some of the shots. It's a real head scratcher why some shots look like that, while others are blurry, flarey and out of focus.

Hey Steve, I understand, those lens are not easy to master.

You can use their wickness to give a certain "look/mood" to your photos but they are definitly not Holgas.

Don't really remember for the perar but i think i paid less than 600€ for the Perar. and i bought the Apoqualia (black paint version) for a little more than 1100€... Doesn't seem to expensive for me...

what kind of skillset and capital does it take to manufacture lenses like miyazaki does? you read about nikon starting out in a garage and you get ideas.

Miyazaki-san used to work for a toy manufacturer in Japan where he designed microscopes and telescopes. When he retired, he started designing his own lenses and got his parts manufactured by the same suppliers he used when still working for the toy manufacturer, with him doing the assembly work on that bench pictured above. He started with small lots of just 200 lenses, and slowly built up the volumes. A few years ago I heard he was thinking of getting the assembly done by a company in China, so I'm not sure if if he still does it that way.

As for Nikon starting out in a garage, that internet myth has always puzzled me. Nikon was formed by an amalgamation of several smaller optics companies in 1917 as a government initiative to make Japan self sufficient for its military-related optics requirements. After WW2, the occupation forces prohibited Nikon from making military equipment, so in 1948 they started making film cameras & lenses at the Nikon 101 building, which was built in 1933. This building was one of just a few concrete buildings in Tokyo when it was built and was considered an example of very modern architecture at the time. As you can see, its a wee bit bigger than a garage. It survived the fire bombing of Tokyo in WW2, only to be demolished last year.

......unless you go to a LTM body like the ii or iii .....
