Photogs / Photo Exhibits This is the place to discuss a particular Photographer (work, style, life, whatever), as well as to post Gallery and Museum Photo Exhibitions and your own impressions of them. As we march on in this new digital world, it is often too easy to forget about the visual importance of the photographic print, as well as their financial importance to the photographer. It is also interesting to remember that some guy named Gene Smith shot with lenses that many lens test reading "never had a picture published in their life" amateurs would turn up their their noses at, as being "unacceptable."

RHL Images in PhotoWork 2018, Poughkeepsie 2/10-3/24/18

Friends & fellow seers and image-philes,

If you are near Poughkeepsie NY over the next 6 weeks, stop by the Barrett Art Center at 55 Noxon Street to tour the PhotoWork 2018 exhibit. Two of my images were included: Lion of Judah and The Sleeper, both of which were first posted here in the RFF Gallery.

The exhibit was juried by E. Jason Wambsgans of the Chicago Tribune, 2017 Pulitzer awardee for his documentary essay on a boy and his family after he was wounded by a stray bullet from drive-by gun violence.

It’s an honor and a pleasure to be included among his selections, especially for work aimed at putting a face on homelessness, hopelessness, hope, and dignity.

Lion of Judah (M4, ZM 50/2, Portra 160, San Francisco)

I’ll post the RFF link to The Sleeper below.

Cheers to all—

Robert

Thanks, friends.

Below I'll underscore the link to all the images in the exhibit, for those who may have missed it buried in the paragraphs above. You can upsize any of them for closer inspection.

Congrats Robert!!!
Well deserved, here’s hoping for lots of print sales.

Some interesting work on that website, I would have liked to be able to see the exhibition in person.

Yes, Poughkeepsie is a long long way from Toronto, not to mention Ferndale.

I’m hoping my daughter and sister-in-law will visit it one weekend, and send me some wall shots of the exhibit.

It is a pretty fairly varied show, considering the journalistic/social-conscious identity of the juror—landscapes and portraits, Photoshop assemblages/manipulations and street-savvy work; I appreciate the dynamic range of imagery. However, I selected my entries based on what I admire about Wambsgans’ work in his Pulitzer portfolio—which, as a pictorial essay, could have come straight out of Life Magazine of my boyhood with essays by Eugene Smith on the country doctor and the mercury poisoning in Minamata.

In this context, having my work in that tradition be selected for this show is a reassuring validation. And I plan to submit work more widely at this point in my life, because why not? and because with the Call For Entry system (CAFE), it is easy to set up a portfolio for submitting work across North America.

(I wonder how many of the RFF Gallery ‘exhibitors’ know about the CAFE system? Maybe
I should post a thread about CAFe https://www.callforentry.org. Clearly there’s a lot of RFF work that deserves wider viewing.)

I'm not too far from Poughkeepsie, so I'll try to make it over to the show. Thanks for the heads-up, and nice work.
