How much film do you shoot?

Hey everyone - I think this is my first thread! At least the first one for while

Anyway, on this forum there's clearly interest in and about film cameras. But how often do you actually use them to take photos with?
Specifically, how much film do you shoot; and what's you favourite kind of subject matter? What's stopping you from shooting more film?

I've added a poll so everyone can clearly see some of the stats.

I'll start: I typically finish about a roll of 35mm every month (BW), then develop it at home. My subject matter is usually from small social gatherings, and some urban landscapes. I also dabble in some still lifes at home. I would shoot more on holidays, or if I were out of town for a bit.

(Apologies if this has been asked before; I couldn't find any other thread that had much data)

I usually shoot 2-3 rolls of 35mm and 1-2 rolls of 120 per month, but that also increases if I'm traveling (for example, I shot 5 rolls in 2 weeks on a recent trip to Maui). I mostly shoot B&W, but recently I've added a few rolls of Velvia 50, and will probably shoot a few rolls of Portra 160 and Ektar 100 over the summer.

I'm not currently self-developing, largely due to available space and the initial cost of getting the required materials. Again, something I hope to get going over the spring/summer.

I shoot many different subjects with film, but mostly landscape, street, documentary, portraits and random daily life stuff.

I take photos with film cameras weekly, if not daily.
Sorry, I'm not counting it in regular rolls. I guess, 4-10 per month.

I'm trying to slow down to 4X30 meters per year in b/w. I do dozen or more of C-41 at home as well. And some of 120, 4x5 b/w (mostly) film, but not as often as 135.

Family, street and anything worth of the film daily.

Shoot mainly landscape but also some nudes. On average I use about 12-18 sheets of B&W 4x5 film per month.

Hi quejai, congrats on your first thread Always nice to see members getting more involved.

I probably shoot about a roll of 35mm a week and a roll of 120 a month.

A mix of family/portraits, landscape/nature and occasionally street. Mostly bw and occasionally Portra 160.

Cheers,

2 to 3 a month, but I'd shoot more if I wasn't buying gear too.

Between my Leica MA and my Rollei Automat I am over 15 rolls a piece just so far this month. Unless one of them breaks, or I do, they will each end the year with over 300 rolls apiece, likely even more than that. I slowed down on the ZI and the Leica Null and have only put about 10 rolls through both of them at this point in the year.

Last year was between 700 and 800 rolls of 35mm and 120. That of course does not count sheet film.

I seem to average 30 -35 rolls/month while at home and a bit more when travelling. This is 35mm and in 120 less, 5-10 rolls/month average . Used to be more, but I have slowed down a bit - age does that!

I only photograph on the weekends, holidays and on my way to and from the office every day. That made about 110 rolls of 35mm and 70 rolls of 120 film last year. All B/W obviously. I post two new photographs every day on my blog.

Wow! That's a lot! How do you manage that? I take pictures everyday, but because of work I just don't have enough time. Also: I'm curious how you keep up with the processing. At almost two rolls a day, you need to be on top of it to not have a huge backlog.

In 2014 I shot around 70 rolls of 35mm and like 15-20 rolls of 120. I mostly shoot when I'm away from home.

Over a year it will be about 4-5 rolls a month. More when it is fine weather and I'm on holiday, less during cold, wet, dark months. Almost all 120 slides but several formats from 6x4.5 to 6x17.

Don't shoot more because of time limitations. Shoot a bit of everything: family, landscape, city...

Tijmendal : i shoot during the week and more so on the weekends. i develop mainly on saturdays and also reuse the chemicals for sundays. a five reel dev tank helps but the biggest contributor to the workflow is the Pakon 135+ scanner, capable of scanning whole rolls in 5 mins.

I wish I shot more, winter is a dead season for me here, the rest of the time I have to fight against the familiarity of my home and keep looking for things to shoot

I'm not shooting so much lately, I'm more involved into editing and printing the already available material in order to finalize the ongoing projects.

My usage varies now. Together with family I can use 2 or 3 36 exposure rolls each day. Plus digital. During the winter, I can hibernate so my use can go down to as low as zero per week!

Just as my 1st year of film photography came to an end, I was at 86rolls (mixed 135 and 120).

I think (and hope) I'll shoot about 5-10 per month.
The problem is processing them, I still have 5-6 rolls that I didn't touch in PS. Scanning is easy now with the Pakon, but I still need to select the few and process.

5 films average a month which is a mix of B&W and some color negative. Very rare some slide film. And that in 35mm and 120 roll film format. When I am traveling it is about the double amount.
I just have to find time to print my best pictures. A scan I am only doing for the web (I am finding this really boring).

My favorite camera's: Leica M7, Zorki-6, FED-3, Cosina Voigtländer Bessa III 667 and a Mamiya 645 pro (mainly studio work).

When I am traveling I am often make the choice for the Leica M7 and/or the Bessa III 667.
Sometimes 2 Zorki-6 bodies.

About the costs: It's neglectible for me film and chemicals, especially when you "find" a forgotten box of 256 Fuji Superia 100 films in the closed Fuji factory in Tilburg (Holland) in auction of production materials. Well Foma is also very cheap for me, Rollei too and my new chemicals are "made in Ukraine". About the UA Grivna valuta to the Euro these are really low costs so for that money I even can not make it myself from bulk. The same for the FSU camera's: You can buy them in Germany, Poland or Ukraine for a 10-40 US$.

A roll of film a week keeps the demons asleep.

Either 35 or 120 work.

You know what they say; a roll a day keeps the doctor away!
O.k. I am far from being that healthy. 2 rolls a month sometimes more if there is something special happening.

A roll a month (well, I have different cameras with a different film in each, but about 36 exp a month)
If I standardize on XTOL developer, I might have to shoot more

We had a few warm days so I finished a couple of rolls I had in a couple of camera's. Took the film. C-41 & the machine was down. Haven't been back yet to see if it has been fixed. Last roll I took to my local CVS Drug store told me their machine broke & there are no spare parts to be found. So now I have to find someone in a neighboring town to develop it or send it off in the mail.

Now it has turned off bitter cold again & I have no desire to shoot any. But Spring is slowly approaching & that means the Furniture Market. I like to shoot that event. So that will be several rolls of B&W film.

Up until about 2009-2010, my film usage (all 135) was several hundred rolls a year.
Then it fell to about two dozen.
But last year I started shooting film more. Several dozen rolls of E6 and B+W, still all 135.
This year I am going to re-equip myself with a scanner, developing kit and B+W supplies.
I expect to shoot 50-60 rolls per year, more or less depending upon what kinds of events and travels I have time for.
I'd like to eventually expand to some MF, too. But everything is so expensive, the euro so low, my salary so mediocre, and what's more I don't really want to sell anything I already have, so it's gonna take some time to save up for new kit. And by the time I do, I'm sure there will be other things that vie for my interest, anyway. But 135 is pretty good, for me at least.

Much more in the summer than now in the cold Chicago winter. Usually buy three or four bricks in June and replenish in August. Probably not going to Sturgis this year, which is always 20 or so rolls, so maybe not as much film shooting this year.
