Business / Philosophy of Photography Taking pics is one thing, but understanding why we take them, what they mean, what they are best used for, how they effect our reality -- all of these and more are important issues of the Philosophy of Photography. One of the best authors on the subject is Susan Sontag in her book "On Photography."

If your photographs were songs...

...what kind of songs would they be?

Good morning everyone!

I always thought my pictures were a little bit like Johnny Cash. Melancholic, "old school" and calm. I prefer to shoot in black and white, I love autumn and winter and the way everything seems to be sleeping or lost in a way.
Yesterday my girlfriend said my photos are more like Depeche Mode to her. A little dark, structured, clear, strict but (gladly ) not boring.
So, what do you think what your picturs would sound like?

Thomas

The best of them would be this - or something very like it or so I would hope. Brooding and contemplative.

I think they'd probably be like Joni Mitchell's album 'Blue' -- sometimes brooding, sometimes joyful, sometimes wanting to run away, wanting to come closer, and on and on.

There is a London street photography video on Youtube that uses this great piece by Buckshot Lefonque

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI6dxjxq4Fw

And here is the video which is great too. So no guessing which song that photographer (Ronya Galka) thinks is best. (With justification - it works well).

Then they would be great images, because Blue is one of the best albums ever.

They'd be like Blood on the Tracks. Varied, tender, visceral, authentic, iconoclastic. Or then again, not.

My photos are like albums, which convey a palette of emotions better than a single song.

U2 - 'Boy'
The Cure - 'Faith' (or even 'Pornography')
Gavin Friday - 'Each man kills the thing he loves'

Or any Radiohead or Thom Yorke album, for that matter...

My photo-songs are not Grammy material, but they convey (to me) what I see happening around me.

Looking though my photographs I realize that in whole they mostly resemble a commercial radio station. Mediocre, repetitive and annoying. But with some good stuff throwed in here and there.

There are a few songs I liken to photographs. Rarely the other way around. But if I had to categorize then, they'd be hard core gangsta rap.

I'm really sorry to say I have to agree with this. It sums up exactly how I feel about my photography.

"I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" - sometimes, anyway.

"Life's Been Good to Me So Far" - other times.

Sometimes at lunch I hear in the background some disjointed, dull tones of a rambling radio host, actually paid to do this by the national radio network here. I'm afraid that's what my pictures will seem like to someone who'd rather listen to Fischer-Dieskau signing Schubert.

King Crimson.

Sometimes angular and abstract, like 'THRAK', sometimes complex and emotional like 'The ConstruKction of Light'.
