Hello retinax, I stand my ground regarding what I said, ďThe typical 35mm, the constitution, and that's it, it's the vibe of it. I rest my case... ...

Just kidding... Yeah, nah - you're most positively right. I can see a strange unsharp blob on the top right side of the image which could be dicentrering - I don't know. Not typical at all. Well spotted.

Could Kevin please have a look at the image ending *****780 that Ed has taken and perhaps ask the maker on a possible explanation. Kevin must be very busy lately - hope you are well.

Probably a good idea to do some formal testing on tripod..brick wall kind of stuff... pretty soon... with the first receivers..
To see about decentering etc..to make sure the QC is up to par..

This is a very important issue for maintaining the high confidence in this lens and the replica project.

I hope that Kevin is paying attention to it.

Wondering how this lens is reaching its customers...through RFF only? If not, rigorous testing would follow as a matter of course.

I am not sure there is any issue here. Look at the wide open MTF. There is some kinda drop of sharpness in the middle frame area. That is part of the design and apparently also present in the original 8 elts. The picture that show this defect with the tree has been shot at f2.5 or so. So I think it can be just this... To be confirmed.

Yes, I've pointed this out in post 1597. People seem to want to disregard this... please, let's not panic.

No panic here.
It seems to be a reasonable expectation to get feedback on this issue.

On the other hand, it seems to be a rather dramatic transition from sharp to blur. An MTF graph does not typically 'drop off the cliff' in that manner. Even if it were to do so, it would be present in all photos at the same f/stop.

Well, just in time, here are 2 images from the original 8-element, again at f/8. While I do not see the issues raised with the prototype, I think the original lens is slightly less sharp.

No panic... However we need to see brick wall tests from f2 to f11.

Did you send payment?

The original may have less contrast, and the images may appear less sharp.

Many flights to and from China have been canceled.
We will have to wait 1-2 additional months in my estimate.

Remember that time when the outbreak of a virus postponed a new lens and everybody freaked out?

Well, that means at least 1.5 billion people will be able to read it.
I don't think RFF has that kind of membership.

Hi guys! Thank you everyone for your warm concern, everything is fine here. Due to the Coronavirus, everything is pausing in China for a month now. The good news is Mr. Zhou's colleagues are coming back for work. Production will gradually resume in the following weeks.

I wish everyone good health.

Best,
Kevin

Appreciate you touching base and glad to hear you are OK.

I've been very impressed by the resilience of Chinese manufacturers and their willingness to support US-business despite the difficult workforce situation.

It's good news that things appear to be stabalising in China.

Thanks for the update Kevin.

Rest assured that I am still good for my 8 element replica order no matter how long it takes to be fulfilled. No pressure here as I can't begin to imagine the difficulties industy in China is facing at the moment.

Cheers.

Thanks Kevin. The (near) pandemic puts many things in perspective. Thoughts with those impacted beyond mere delays.

Thank you Kevin. As an old fellow with some chronic health problems, I have felt all along that we are all in this together. Wishing the best to you, Mr. Zhou, and the co-workers is part and parcel of preparing ourselves here at home, not only trying to stay safe, but trying not to spread this horrible illness to others.

RFF is a community. In tough times like these, sharing news and maintaining our ties to others over RFF and the internet in general is what is the most important socially and to keep our spirits up.
