Yes, but what you do is check eBay prices for what has sold. So yes, they do actually reflect retail prices in private transactions. In fact, KEH sells through eBay as well so I'm fairly certain they price accordingly and pay attention to the trends from the biggest second hand sales marketplace on the internet. I don't pay attention to what things are listed for unless I'm pricing below the competition. Even then, this place and others are horrible bell-weathers as sales here are not actually tracked with real sold prices, like eBay and really, the buyers here are basically non-existent.

Edit:

Here's one they actually sold on eBay. Now, this may be different from what you received and how that affects price, but here's a baseline to point to their sale price on eBay and you can use this to talk to them and see what they may be willing to do.

There probably very, very few (if any) forum members that have bought and sold enough 35 crons to have a good idea what it's worth without looking at items actually sold on eBay.

Besides that there a few other web sites that sell Leica gear, you can check them for prices.

Some people, who do not use eBay, do not know how to look for sold auctions or what that may be... I believe that you might need to be logged in to look at completed auctions?

On the other hand, I find eBay completed (sold) auctions AND forum classified prices to be very close to being the same on many items. Yes, I've bought and sold on both. Store prices are usually more.

I bought a black 35mm Summicron ASPH on eBay a few months ago for about $1500 or $1600. I thought that was about the right price.

Why don't you just send it back? You bought a BP and got a BC. It's not what you wanted and now you want to keep it? I wonder what they could have gotten away with sending you instead? Would have you accepted a chrome one?

Unfortunately ebay sold prices don NOT in all cases reflect what was actually paid. If sold for a negotiated "best offer", the original asking price will be displayed in the sold listing. Or so it was a few months ago.

KEH
Seems to make a lot of mistakes
They sold an early Nikkor 85mm f2 in Leica screwmount
For $175
It was marked made in occupied japan on the barrel
Very rare and sold as ordinary
Congratulations you won
Black paint for black chrome or better yet early chrome price

What’s with the mass post deletions? It's very disrespectful of the forum if you ask me...

Usually, when people do that its because they didn't like the answers they were given.

He felt it was getting too argumentative. Not entirely sure why as I gave him good advice and was just asserting that in my responses. Oh well. I still maintain eBay is a great resource for current value of sold items and also what to list your stuff for based on current listings. While many are overpriced, they still provide valuable data and allow you to undercut the current lowest priced BIN item. Of course other resources help as well and all of that goes into evaluating how much something may be monetarily worth.

The OP was attempting to build a case that Summicron 35 Asphs were routinely going for $1500 - or at least less than Ebay prices - in the hopes of convincing KEH to discount a misadvertised lens. They beleived Ebay prices were inflated relative to private sales.

At least personally, I don't see KEH dropping below $1,800 on a Summicron 35 Asph in good condition. KEH tends to be on the upper end of Ebay prices for their higher end gear. Best of luck making your case - maybe you'll get lucky.

I think he may have felt that his question was being trivialized or dismissed by being told to go look somewhere else.

I have been looking at 35mm Summicrons for about a year in most of the usual places. I haven't seen one of any vintage or finish for less than $1600. Most are in the $1800-$2000 range. Just my experience.

I've bought 4 and sold 3 of these lenses (though over a period of around 15 years). I've always thought the 35 Summicron ASPH is an excellent lens but I was forever selling or trading it against something that on paper seemed more exciting (the first one for a 28-35-50 Tri-Elmar, the second and third for various flavours of the 35 Summilux ASPH). The first one cost me £795 brand new in 2002 and the fourth one (the limited edition black chrome and which I still have) was £2500 in 2015. There's a story of Leica (and UK) inflation in there somewhere.
