My Pink Oktober

Well, I bought this Zorki 4 during red Oktober.

And now:

Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but it sure gets a reaction and people want their pic taken with it!

The leather is from Aki- Asahi and what was nice is that for the price of one ($14), they also included a set in brown leather. I guess they thought I may have buyer's remorse!

Highly recommend Aki-Asahii, great service and their stuff always fits perfectly.

Camera looks sweet with new skin. Original plastic is kinda crappy.

Very appropriate as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and people wear pink to show support for Breast Cancer patients and survivors.

Best,

A mighty fine looking Zorki-4 now. Yellow would be my choice.

Thanks Huss, you've inspired me to do one with this nice sparkling pink stuff but first I'll practise a bit on this old camera. It's only film so it won't matter much...

It's a good thing I've picked up lots of tips about working on them here.

October was Breast Cancer Month, so the pink color was suitable.

Oh no, old Leicas expect love taps from 15 lb sledge hammers. It's how you get that patina.

In Soviet Russia, Zorkis patina you.

Discreet and under-the-radar doesn't apply here.

I want to go with you while you are packing that thing around. I'll bring my LCA-120.

Nobody will know I'm even there at all.

I have friends who lurk and buy stuff in craft shops and I've often thought that some of the leathers etc I seen there would enhance a few cameras. I have looked at snakeskin, white leather and have often wondered about the sharkskin you see on antique firearms.

I'll stop now as this is getting serious. ;-)

Wow! Are those at all close to the size of the red Leica logo that people get so worked up about (and props up the black tape industry in no small way I am sure...)?

David, Aki-Asahi may have what you are looking for. They have numerous colours and finishes, plus they are cheap, ship immediately and fit perfectly.
Unlike Cameraleather.com who I used to deal with in the past.

Not sure how big the red dots are but those things were bought in a mobile phone shop and are about 11 to 11˝mm across.

You can get similar metallic stickers like hearts and that kitten in craft shops and toy dept's.

Thanks, I'll have a look and ponder; I've already got a Leica M with dark tan/brown leather and it is very good looking, imo, but very difficult to photograph as it comes out so near black...

Hi,

Would you believe I'm jealous? My part of the world seems to have fewer and fewer opportunities for photography other than the commonplace and most places are beginning to look the same.

Hi David, permit me, I am not sure if you really mean it. It’s such a commonplace. Well, one in pink A color you wouldn't encounter much? What makes more look the same? Is it a corporate dominated color pallet that is simple and repetitive??
I must add: “It’s Thailand“, as on my flickr, was aimed at people who know Thailand well. Possibly they even see it represented well. I better put "it’s in Thailand " last thing I want is pushing simplifying and therefore stupid stereotypes.

Hi,

You and 2 or 3 others are very lucky as you seem to have much more variety in your countries to photograph.

Here there's a sort of conformity and, worse, inoffensive blandness spreading. Years ago most of the large shops started to look the same inside (apart from the prices) and nowadays the small shops have vanished and even (sigh) the charity shops look the same. And this has spread to our houses, gardens, streets, cars and so on. Worse still, I can't think of a decent street market nearby and 10 years ago there were plenty, unlike (say) France or Belgium.

Regards, David

PS I can guess the response I'll get from others and so I'll add that interesting things are still there but I have to travel a lot further and hunt them out; once upon a time they were on my doorstep or just down the road.

David I guess you are right. What comes to my mind, not sure if it relates, hopefully it does:
For some 25 years I had been selling Asian handicrafts in markets in Austria. Soon I learned that anything unique, even if it was a beautiful antique, generally won't even get noticed. In order for a customer to be interested in something commonly it must be something that he has seen many times before. Best chance that someone buys if it is something that already had been seen in a magazine and / or if, at least something similar, already is owned by someone she/he knows.

My pleasure, I took this picture in post-USSR Moldova and pink, instead of red may have been the appropriate color...
