The light meter will not be accurate with the 21mm SA. But is will give readings, they are not correct and fluctuate with focal distance as the rear element moves closer to the film at infinity focus. I removed the battery as it was annoying to have incorrect readings.
The VF is only for focusing, you'll need a 21mm external finder to frame. It is not hard to switch between the two with a bit of practice, or even to scale focus based on feel.
The 21mm SA is a great lens with a rendering that is different to any other 21mm lens for the Leica. The VM 21/4 is a completely different lens, the only thing in common is the focal length. If you want the look of the 21mm SA, then you just have to put up with the lack of metering. If you want TTL metering, get a different lens.
