Frank Jackson on Street Photography I am happy and excited to announce a new RFF forum on Street Photography mentored by Frank Jackson, one of the best producers of analog B/W prints I have ever seen. His shows include the Open Shutter Gallery, Heriard-Cimino Gallery, and Ogden Museum of Southern Art. His images are in the collections of Smithsonian Ogden Museum of Southern Art, California Afro American Museum and Xavier University New Orleans LA. He has worked for or has been featured with Visa Card, Xerox, UCLA, Eric Owen Moss, Architect, Hasselblad Forum (cover),Gordon Parks, Muhammed Ali, Million Man March Wash. DC, Lionel Hampton, jazz legion photographer , 1995-2002, Stevie Wonder, B+W Magazine (British version) twice, Rangefinder Magazine, Dahon Bicycles, Arelli Wheels, Real Product Design, Automobile Club of Southern California. Frank's online images are at fotographz.500px.com and fotographzfrankjackson.tumblr.com . "While on this diverse photographic journey…I have to say during this whole time my love for fine art black and white photography kept growing. I always found time to shoot in different cities and my own personal work…this has sustained me through some very tough times. As of 2012, with the help of a very good friend I maintain a state-of-the-art dream darkroom. The darkroom helps greatly in the on-going practice of understanding “the light”, being able to process film and print drives me to keep my digital photography “organic”. I’m curious visually and shooting what’s, what on the street feeds this curiosity. Everyday I walk out my front door to “see” the world with a digital camera, a film camera, the “cup” and an open mind (mostly).

thank you Doug!
street photography, if not mostly graphic but showing people, is said having to be candid. My photos above mostly aren't either. As an obvious foreigner I prefer asking people if I can take their photo and have them take their pose.
Hijab, head scarfs and traditional looking clothes, in Indonesia, have become "cool" and "fashionable" these days and do not necessarily denote religious, less fundamentally religious persons. The ladies had been busy posing to each other and taking selfies, see below, that made me dare ask them for their pic. Again Sony NEX5n + C.V. Heliar f4.5/15mm:

1024) {this.width=1024;this.alt='Click here to see a large version';}" onmouseover="if(this.alt) this.style.cursor='pointer';" onclick="if(this.alt) window.open('https://farm1.staticflickr.com/908/39854124580_8881643b22_b.jpg');" border="0">

Thank you! Taipei-chan practice sure helps. Some 10 years ago I had started using manual lenses on digital dSLR, that was good training, focusing on a mirrorless system camera is much more easy. The 15mm on APS-C mostly can do with zone focusing, though I admit that I hardly do that but focus every photo wide open, than stop down, just already used to that. People, when posing, often expect that I'd release more fast than I can having to focus first. More and more often, before asking if I could take their pic, I try to prefocus.
more from Java island, Indonesia 2018, again all taken with C.V. Heliar f4.5/15mm on Sony NEX5n ( but pic. 6, the two sitting girls, that was taken with C.V. Skopar f4/25mm )

what do you think?

for me a potentially famous photographer in the making!
a young Spaniard taking color street photos in Asia, Saigon, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, he only started taking photos quite recently and uses a second hand, rather low tier dSLR + kit zoom, lately he added a 35mm / abt. 50mm equiv. fixed lens.

Lucky to have found a dear friend in him I'd love to know how you experienced photographers here view his photography, loved to let him know that too.

here some of his very distinct style color street photography
https://streetvisionphotography.wordpress.com/

thanks and cheers, andreas

P.S. if there are answers, better to move this to another location in the forum? Moderator please go ahead!

this post foremost is intended to "up" my last post asking for opinion about my friend Victor's street photography. He is very concentrated and talented and would profit from critic and / or encouragement.

A quote of his: ""I'm really obsessed with the composition, looking after matching colors, lines, simple and tidy backgrounds, kind of minimal street photography, and of course, adding the human factor. Without exception, in my frames, the subject and the spot must match somehow, colors, gestures, something that complements each other nicely."

my sample below only partly represents that but is a bit of a similar genre, hoping to encourage you to check out his photography by clicking on the link provided in my last post above.

You are right his work on his web site shown on your other post (I responded to the wrong one) is terrific. A great eye. My only advice to him (if I am qualified to give it) is keep on doing what he is doing as it is excellent but also don't be afraid to experiment. I find that experimentation is needed over time to avoid the eventual "rut" we all get into.

Lately for better or for worse I have been experimenting with a somewhat textured, "grunge' approach to color street. Something of an artistic painterly "take" I suppose. In any event I will see where it leads or whether I persist.

thank you very much Peter, good advice.

Victor had noticed increased traffic to his site and thought that I had linked it some place, sent him the link to here yesterday. He is very pleased by your reaction. Right now he is very focussed and knows exactly what he wants.

haha, yes, thank you. This one is sure is almost like a copy. I know little about famous photographers, I believe Victor knows better.
other photos of Victor imo have similarities with some photos by Saul Leiter, though Victor takes his to his own, often more extreme reduction of elements.

thank you very much Robert!
for me communicating with my subject and having that part of the theme is the most natural and respectful, also joyful and interesting way. Since generally my approach seems little done or recognized I am very happy about your comment, thank you.

These are nice, Peter. I vote that you continue down this path for awhile to see where it leads you (and us). :-)
