Photogs / Photo Exhibits This is the place to discuss a particular Photographer (work, style, life, whatever), as well as to post Gallery and Museum Photo Exhibitions and your own impressions of them. As we march on in this new digital world, it is often too easy to forget about the visual importance of the photographic print, as well as their financial importance to the photographer. It is also interesting to remember that some guy named Gene Smith shot with lenses that many lens test reading "never had a picture published in their life" amateurs would turn up their their noses at, as being "unacceptable."

Bruce Gilden selected my photo for Street Photo Contest.

Just thought I'd share the following: Today the Duncan Miller Gallery ran my winning photograph from the Your Daily Photograph 2014 International Street Photography Contest judged by Magnum photographer and 2013 Guggenheim fellow Bruce Gilden.

About the Duncan Miller Gallery:

SANTA MONICA LOCATION
Bergamot Station arts complex at
2525 Michigan Ave, Unit A7
Santa Monica, CA 90404

VENICE LOCATION
10959 Venice Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90034

The Duncan Miller Gallery has a huge collection of photographs -- but vintage and current. I subscribed to their Your Daily Photograph a year or so ago. Each day I get an e-mail with three photographs. I really look forward to it. Check it out.

Also, the gallery does a real service to photographers the world over and helps advance photography -- they asked that all photographer participants in the contest ask others to post this on their social media.

It's a photo that creates questions in the viewer's mind, which in my opinion, is what photography is all about. Congrats for the selection but more for the photo itself.

Was this with a Rollei?

Congratulations, Dan! Why, with all the fame, you'll soon be able to afford all the flashbulbs you can find. Keep shooting, and I hope you get even more awards.

An excellent photograph.
The geometry, the special expression of the people, all perfect.
A mystery well shown.
Being chosen, well deserved and satisfying.
Gilden a very hard critic..but fair and just.
Congratulations.

It's a vertical 16x20 print with a 12x12 image. Yes, it was with my trusty 1961 Rolleiflex 2.8f, TMY120 film, 1/250th sec, f/11.5, Medium Yellow filter, developed in Tmax at 68 degrees, and scanned to 29x29 at 300 dpi with a Nikon 9000 scanner.

The man in the photo is just waking from a seizure and is disorientated. His family is on the left watching the 2 friendly policemen helping him. When he had the seizure, the policemen put him on his side -- so it was a learning experience for onlookers. I saw this unfolding from a block away and tried to find a good angle and the right moment. I was very lucky with the scene and it's relation to the sun's position.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I recommend others contact Duncan Miller regarding having them show your work. It doesn't cost any money. Here's how it works. You contact them expressing interest in having your photos shown on YourDailyPhotograph.com They will ask for a link to your work, and a few background questions. Then they review it. And if it meets their requirements they send you a link for uploading a maximum of 3 photos. You have to agree to certain conditions -- like providing a print within a certain time frame if your photo sells.

For this Street Photo contest the gallery sent an e-mail announcement. Like another poster mentioned, Bruce Gilden likes to say "smell the street." And the announcement quoted this. So I selected 3 photos I hoped his phrase could apply to. From 400 entries, Bruce selected 23 photos -- they started displaying the photos one per day around 12/7/2014. Unfortunately, I don't think the gallery has any plans to set up a webpage with all the selected photos. And I was wondering if the photos would have some common thread. Not sure if they did.

I learned of YourDailyPhotograph.com and the Duncan Miller Gallery from attending an event at Fotocare in NYC. Daniel Miller gave a talk about how to get gallery representation. My main take-away was him saying the best way was to be recommended by an artist who's already represented by that gallery.

After the event I subscribed to the YourDailyPhotography.com -- and each day at 9am PST or 12pm EST I receive an e-mail like this: http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=...&id=022c468ec9 There are usually/always 3 photos. First photo is vintage -- often by an anonymous photographer. Then there is often an emerging photographer. And last is often a photograph chosen by a guest curator -- in this case Bruce Gilden.

I think it's great that the gallery tries to help photographers and photography in general. The gallery knows this gives photographers something to put on their CV's, which will hopefully help them get in shows.
