Here is the story of the hat. This photo, made in the summer of 2008, is of Rosevelt Dudley in Rosedale Mississippi. Rosedale achieved fame in blues music as this was the place where at the crossroads just outside town that the legendary blues man, Robert Johnson, traded his soul to the devil for his guitar playing ability. In modern times, Rosedale is a dirt poor delta town, almost exclusively black where the major source of income is "getting a check". But back in the alley is a fun place for me to hang out. Rosevelt (who spells his name different than the president) is a regular.

While back in Rosedale in the winter of this year, 2009, I went by Rosevelt's trailer to give him a print of this photo. He was so concerned that my almost bald head would not do well in the below freezing weather that he gave me this hat to wear. I accepted without showing my hesitancy.

Later, back in the alley having another malt liquor, everyone was talking about me wearing Rosevelt's hat. When I took it off to show them, I realized there was a nest of small bugs living inside the hat. Everyone had a good laugh and I asked someone to please return the hat to Rosevelt with my thanks for the use.

If you need a hat, and who doesn't need a hat, visit Meyer the Hatter on St. Charles Street in New Orleans.

My wife inside Meyer the Hatter's store with Michael Meyer, the fourth generation of Meyers to work in the store. Sam, his dad, is still in nearly every day at age 83. We only bought three hats yesterday.

Thread resurrection! Give us your hatters mad or sane, sensible or drop-dead styling. Maybe if we post enough new hats we'll even resurrect a reappearance of Rob K.

Hats, not caps are sold by street vendors all over NYC. I was quite surprised to see this.
