Cueto, Cuba: our garbageman. He comes by several times a week but not on a fixed schedule. He is compensated by the the sale of the recyclable beer bottles and cans in the trash. His job is unofficial but the community simply acknowledges this is his route and no one intrudes. There is never any food waste in the garbage as that is placed in an outside bucket that a neighbor picks up to feed his pigs.

Cueto, Cuba: Yordanka Harambouru helping prepare food for a family party at her grandmother's house. Books of her poetry have been published. She was valedictorian at the University of Holguin and has been declared a National Vanguard by the Cuban government. She was previously a Director in the Ministry of Culture and now teaches English and poetry. Yordanka has also spent time in prison for prostitution. Her youth was spent away at a soviet style sports school / training camp. She has a black belt in judo. We have been married for five years.

My late wife, Sue. We were married for 48 years when she died. After spending much of her adult life helping raise 4 children, she turned to equestrian training and competition. In this 2003 photo, she is exiting the ring after performing a high scoring ride in a class just below the Olympic level. That defined her later life.

Window washer clarifying the art gallery windows, Eureka, California. The glass was so clean it seemed to vanish.

Homeless man arranging his backpack, with special attention to his family of stuffed animals, outside Dot Dotson’s camera shop, Eugene, Oregon. Evening coming on in the rainy season. / RX1

Roland Feller, Swiss-born luthier, in his San Francisco shop, writing up the list of violas he was lending my wife to test. We took $100,000 worth of instruments and drove home, 275 miles north. The best luthiers routinely do this for professional players. We returned two weeks later once Linn decided which viola would be hers. / RX1

Man being escorted by a deputy to the Hoke County courthouse, Raeford, North Carolina. I particularly admired his Champion sweatshirt and his dignity wearing jail bracelets. / GR
