You, sir, are a man of excellent taste. I have a Peugeot Orient Express I rescued from a garage sale years ago. It is a fantastic bike—best fifty bucks I ever spent!

So I posted this in the thread "self portraits", now Bicycles, and I see there is one for reflections and shadows...

I did a 'mini' tuneup on this 1969 Schwinn Varsity 10-speed for a friend of mine. I love the classic lines of this bike -- I know the women's frames aren't traditionally as desirable as men's frames, but I think with the way many current bike frames are designed, they almost have elements of these older framed bikes. Nowadays, I don't think these bikes are considered exclusively for women.

Nice thing about this particular bike is that I got everything working (including the speedo) and it's the perfect city bike. I gave it a good scrubbing, removed all the ugly electrical tape holding down the wiring for the lights, waxed the frame, cleaned and polished some of the components, and I think it now looks super. Just needs the rear reflector, and I'm going to change all the wiring for the lights to brown.

OMG Vince, that's my Mom's exact bike, save for the speedo. She bought it in 1971 and rode it for years. That brown metallic paint was gorgeous. Even had the same orange gumwall tires on it (although hers were cracked very badly). The generator for the lights rubbed on the tires and I think helped contribute to the cracking.

That's really cool.

Best,
-Tim

Just finished reviving this 1950 Western Flyer Super. It was quite a greasy, dirty, grungy mess, and required a total teardown. Everything scrubbed clean, polished, regreased and adjusted. The only things I had to replace were the tires (beautiful US Royal Chain Tread) and tubes, a few screws and nuts here and there, and a longer seatpost for me. It's missing its rear turn signal lenses and the tank-mounted turn signal switch, but hopefully I'll be able to figure something out. Horn works, headlight not currently working. Rides beautifully.

An early morning shot of the Western Flyer. I just added a vintage REG water bottle cage and a Klean Kanteen stainless bottle. I think it works with the rest of the bike, and it's a nice convenience to have along while riding.

Western Flyer Super is all done -- found the replacement turn signal lenses, found the Delta switch (though not completely correct), replaced the Klean Kanteen bottle with a repro Coloral. All ready for Sunday's Tweed Ride!

Throw back Thursday. Found a bunch of old Ektachrome slides I shot back in the Spring of 1986 with my Canon TX. Was a grad student at the time at Ohio University and a local bike shop decided to hold a road race on the hilly streets of Athens. To everyone's delight the Killian's Red Irish Racing Team with the McCormack brothers showed up.

Alan was the star of the team, here he is pre-race, trying to ignore a race official:

Killian's Red promoted them as the McCormack brothers from Ireland, and while they were all fresh off the boat from Ireland, they were actually two brothers and a cousin. Alan's brother Paul is on the right, can't remember the cousin's name:

One of the Gianni-Motta team bikes ridden by Alan, leaning agains the team van:

And here's what they came to town to do:

It was a wonderful afternoon of racing.

Best,
-Tim
