Hi John, I think you have a problem with the goggles. In the small, round window on the left, seen from front, there is a prism. I think this prism is out of position. The position of this prism can be adjusted by tiny screws. These are located in tiny holes in the black crinckle painted frame and are usually covered with black wax. BUT: to readjust the position of this prism is not a DIY-job. Most probably the prism is completely loose. The best thing you can do is contact a repairman - DAG for instance - and ask if he can fix it.

Maybe not the sharpest and it doesn‘t give much 3D feeling but the lens helps making the pictures look dreamy wide open and friendly when stopped down.
Actually I find the sharpness perfect wide open, it gives its character.
Even if I could wish a bit more crisp above F2.8 like a Summicron.

A very useful summary for me, an M-E owner. Thanks. I was looking around for a decent price for this lens (no luck), but having seen most of the images from this thread, I think I'm happy enough with my Summicron iv 35mm without having to get the pre ASPH Summilux.
