This direction makes a lot of sense for Leica (not being sarcastic). It's aimed at a market that is much less sensitive to price, where there's no immediate competition, where the alternatives above and below have significant disadvantages, and that values absolute quality.

As a layman, this sounds like a good move for the company.

Now they wan't to compete with hasselblad, phase one, etc.
What do they have? A far better quality of the lenses, a never seen low price tag for a medium format camera, the ultimate sensor?
Is this a real camera, or a medium format camera for collectors of leica equipment?

This is so ironic and hilarious - I can't stop laughing.

Leica sits on an egg for so long and finally the result is a SLR-like new system!

Too funny.

Is this for real or is this a joke? It is uglier than the R cameras by Leica.

From the magazine page which includes the picture above:

"From pros experience with Leica S2 prototype, we'd say it fits somewhere between Canon 5D and EOS 1Ds MkIII in terms of size..."

(With apologies in advance.)

Cool, and they named it after a venerable Nikon rangefinder camera.

It's obvious where their investment dollars have been going. Even Leica is letting the M system suck hind tit.

Well, I'd rather have this camera than a mammoth Nikon D3 or Canon 1DMarkWhatever.
The price of this is going to be out of this world. The M8 is priced at the top DSRL level, so if Leica sees this as an upper level system than the digital M, expect to pay tons of $$$.

Anyway, I don't want a DSLR. I want a compact, small size, quality, FF camera that takes M lenses, as a lot of people here want, and this isn't it :-(.

This camera has been extrapolated on LUF for quite some time now... Even the name was known before. Now we are waiting for the R10 halfway next year....

Even better, a new AF system, developed by Leica. Not surprising, as Leica is the original inventor of AF, sadly lost to Minolta back then...

That price is consistent with other medium format DRFs in the market.

But more importantly I would like to know who made the sensor which Leica is using for S2.

You got to give it to Leica, this is a Hail Mary pass, putting all of their R&D in the MF market. It'll be interesting to see if that market responds.

I'm a bit disappointed by this truth-be told. When I first heard about the S2, I was hoping for something more inline with the original S1. Not a tethered studio camera, but a dSLR that could use a collection of first and third-party lenses, (new) S-mount, R, M, Canon, Nikon all using adapters. With a 'bigger than 35mm' sensor, software could have cropped the sensor for optimisation with any given lense, with the AF disabled for all but the S-mount lenses.

As it is, it looks like a lovely camera, but too close to the existing Hasselblads, Leafs etc...

Any idea if this will ever make it to production? I only see the word "Prototype" in the text posted by PizzaHut88

Curious,

Ya.. and I quote:

I don't see anyone stating when this would be in production or available that's all - right now it's a prototype - it's a great announcement but there's no production set up is there? (or is there??) - I'm looking at this akin to Pentax's initial DSLR announcement a number of years ago and it took them quite a while to get the final product to the retail chain level.

The sensor is significantly smaller than MF so I doubt it can compete with those digital MF Hasselblads. If you read the article, you'll see that it's meant to compete for high-end "field" situations where you can't lug around the MF gear, laptop, etc. And that niche is usually filled in by the top of the line Canons and Nikons.

Leica can't muscle in on the big boys' main turf, so they're going after a target that's mostly Canon and Nikon for lack of a better alternative.
