Hi guys,
I just got my M3 back from CLA and the curtain was oily. It doesn't seem to hold it's shape now and a bit appears to be sticking out the lens side of the curtain. It dry fires ok, and I can't see light coming through - should I be concerned about this?

Send it back to whoever did the service. This kind of work is unacceptable..

wo! who did the cla on that? was it a leica specialist? if they return it in this state then they should be putting it right!

You should be concerned. I'm pretty certain you have a light leak, due to the part that sticks out.
Send it back, or get some sort of financial satisfaction.

Thanks guys,
I just heard back from the repairer - camera is being returned and shutter curtains replaced.
I'm confident that the repairer will sort everything out but it's frustrating nonetheless - there's a few things coming up that I really wanted to shoot with the Leica.

Alright I'm officially f***ing pissed.
Got the M3 back with a new curtain.
Now it won't focus to the closest distances - the rangefinder patch stops moving before the focussing ring reaches the stop. It never used to do this.
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to fix it?

I should probably hold my tongue ATM, but the repairer in question has a good reputation, on this board and elsewhere. The curtain was replaced promptly with no fuss, but this is annoying.
Is this just a distance calibration issue? Trying to do some research on the net right now...

Alright, it seems the rangefinder control arm is making contact with what I think is the lens retaining spring.
Just behind the big wheel in this pic, the rangefinder arm makes contact with that flat metal spring (?). The close limiting arm, right side of pic, does not touch the eccentric when this happens.
Is the rangefinder arm supposed to be angled like this?
Note the remnants of the factory seal in the screw hole of the lens mount - my camera was a virgin till this clown got in and f***d with it. The adjustment screws in now look beaten to the ****ouse.

just looked at both mine and to my eye, either
a/ the arm has been bent, unlikely
b/ a spacer hasn't been fitted
c/ when they refitted the arm they used a screwdriver from the front through the lens bayonet and bent the post!

the roller should be parallel to the top and bottom plates and yours looks off. clearance is quite small. on my m6 ttl it's less than .5mm, on my mp it's about 1mm. Roller arm should move freely with clearance between the arm and lens spring, front to back. It's not a calibration issue.

I just took a look at the front on view and to my mind they have either bent the post or crossed threaded the screw. the head of the screw and the roller are not parallel to the shutter gate. they should be!

sorry to multiple post but I just had another thought. maybe it's not the post thats bent but the rangefinder assembly has not been seated properly on the body casting.
In any case, whoever did it has done a c@@p job and they need to sort it.
Personally I would get it sorted elsewhere and send them a bill!

The RF arm looks badly damaged. The inner stop that you say makes contact is very likely stopping the RF movement too soon. And all alignments are supposed to be parallel. No way are things supposed to look askew.
I fear your repairman has rendered your camera into a parts camera.

Nobby, thanks for the replies mate, I appreciate it! Been getting myself worked up here for the past hour or so...
Coincidentally, just as you posted I found something else on the net suggesting one can adjust the height of the roller by bending the arm.
So I 'bent' it and realised that the screw that clamps the rangefinder arm to the mechanism was loose - tightened up now and all is well. The arm is straight and clears the spring, and the screw itself is properly seated and straight. Lenses focus down to their stops properly.
I just have to hope like hell that whatever that screw adjusts remained accurate while it was loose... I'll run a roll of film through it tomorrow to try and check the focus.

Benno, If that screw was loose you may find now that your 1m focus is off. Easy to sort out though.

I already know who did the repair. I sent this person a Leica IIIf RD and it was returned with oily curtains as well as oil inside the film chamber. Sent it back and got new curtains but still had to clean the oil from the film chamber and take-up spool which by then had become oily...

I had my Leica III CLA'd for speeds off and rangefinder off by Youxin. It came back smelling strongly of WD-40 or something. The film chamber was oily, and oil would appear from the film rewind lever for awhile. He made a "special" adjustment on the rangefinder since the vertical was off by a fair amount, and now the rangefinder is off for stuff closer than 3 meters. His turnaround is quick and he seemed like a nice guy, but I won't send him stuff again. Many have have been happy with his service, so mine might be a singular experience. Never had a problem with Sherry K.
