The 35 Nokton's bokeh was already critizised when you couldn't buy it yet.

and while we are defending lenses, let me add that the bigger nokton (35/1.2) w/out hood barely intrudes into the corner of the 35 frame on the ZI. It is pretty flare resistant so I often use it w/out hood.

I'd get the Nokton, the Ultron or a Summicron. Summilux seems overpriced to its standards.

Nokton has some distortion, Cron none. Never noticed any on an Ultron, but its quite big and 'Cron seems sharper wide open and I think, also at F2. Cron is small like Nokton 1.4, Ultron quite big compared to these, but dirt cheap for its quality I would say.

I like my 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH, it lacks center-sharpness:

Every time one of these threads pops up I find myself having to jump in and defend the Nokton 1.4. This is one of the few where this lens hasn't been relentlessly trashed!
I'll echo Sockeyed's experience. Well built, and I never get these bokeh issues others have complained about. I also have the SC version.
Hmmm...myself, TomA and Sockeyed all have nice copies of the same lens. Must be the Vancouver light!

I LOVE MY NOKTON 35/1.4 (MC version)

I know some people complain about the barrel distortion of this lens, but I find it to be far less than the barrel distortion my now sold Nikkor AIS 35/1.4 (SLR lens) exhibited. Now that lens had some nasty barrel distortion that got worse the closer you focused.

I get pretty distinct rings under direct light, for instance, in my test I would have seen a double shoulder on the guy sitting under the light, etc. what stop is your first photo at? f2ish?

It seems that I have a quite good copy. My one is Made in Germany and a very late SN # (35383xx). Both photos were taken @ f/1.4 and either 1/15s or 1/30s (Light in this bar is in the EV 3 to 5 range)

I love my MC 35 Nokton, and I think it renders bokeh very well from f/2 on. I've yet to see a comparison showing that the bokeh is harsh compared with that of another lens at the same settings. The only problem I see with this lens is the barrel distortion, worse at close distance.

With the pre-asph Summilux, barrel distortion is the least of your worries. Wide open, it's soft even in the center. The corners are mush. The edges of objects appear to have experienced erosion, and flare softens everything in the frame. Point light sources exhibit so much coma Dali could have painted them. Asking if the pre-aspherical Summilux 35 has barrel distortion is like fleeing your burning home and wondering if you left the iron on.

I recently got a lux 50, 89 vintage, and am very pleased with its qualities, especially at the widest apertures. I'm wondering if the 35 lux is simlar in this respect.
