Understand there is firmware to upgrade R-D1 to become a R-D1s. However, someone told me the pics taken by R-D1 are more film-looking than those by R-D1s.
Don't really know if the upgrade will makes R-D1 all the same as R-D1s. Can anyone explain, as I don't know which to pick?
Thank you in advance.

There should be no difference between the two in terms of picture taking - the sensor is the same, and then you're installing the RD-1s firmware onto the RD-1 so that takes care of the other variable. The only real difference is something to do with the method of rangefinder adjustment I believe.

Been using both since their coming and i did the upgrade in 2006 with no regret at all. Never seen significant IQ differences save that 1600 iso pics look less noisy with the R-D1s or the upgraded R-D1 than with the original R-D1. IQ wise the R-D1s and upgraded R-D1 look exactly the same camera.

Thanks for your advice...since 2 cameras with same firmware are similar, then why R-D1s still US$100-200 more expensive here in HK?

R-D1S is from 2006 which R-D1 is 2004, so if under same usage, 2006 one of coz a bit expensive, agree?

^ depends on what you're saying. honestly, it is hard to find an R-D1, but yes, the R-D1s does usually go for a bit more.
