Hiya,

I'm in a pretty perky mood today, found out after a bit of hassling and jockeying that I'm finally managing to make to serious headway with my Milton Keynes project (Impression Milton Keynes) -- staretd as a few photos for myself and is now one huge hulking monster I am trying to keep under control!

Anyway, you can read it on-line Read MK News On-line - Go to Page 16 (Adobe Flash required)

I've attached a JPEG too
JPEG copy of article

Which you might be able to just about read (Despite some screen artefacts) and low res pictures.

The only error is it says I was from Haddenham in Cambridgeshire, in fact it was Haddenham in Bucks -- which makes more sense geographically :)

Anyway, pretty pleased about this :)

It's become a bit of a monster this project, in a good way!

Sounds like an interesting project but a lot of work. Remember Eugene Smith and his Pittsberg project, do get overwhelmed.
Keep us posted, let us know how the initial show goes.

I have had this joke from the very outset that this musn't become my Pittsburgh for the very reasons you cite.

But Eugene Smith has been a huge influence on me; although I have never attempted to set out a photographic essay that explains the entire essence of human society at a point of time through citylife as I believe Smith was attempting (and to some extent captured very well indeed) -- I just wanted to take some pictures.

I am very clear that unless a large swathe of the city hasn't been walked through, I will have this project finished and in the bag on August 6th (Hiroshima Day, when the Buddhist Monks and the community gather at the Peace Pagoda at Willen Lake and set lanterns out over the waters... stunning and touching, and very surprising for people who think only of concrete cows and roundabouts with regard to MK...)

I mentioned to Stewart in his Corfu book thread that I can understand the feeling of 'what now' quite well already because when this project is done, and the book is finished -- what now?

I can quite see myself visiting MK time to time just to stay in touch with the place, I've met some real characters, some great people, some of whom have become friends really. It's got a hold on me, but those pictures will form nothing more than the odd slide that I have to myself.

But yes, this won't be my Pittsburgh... I hope!

Congratulations Vicki.
A job well done and recognition well deserved.

But please... don't diminish the "local" press.

The way things are going, it soon will be all we have left.

Sadly.

Nice one Vicki, looking good. Looking forward to your next project. Just came across your blog too, very good! Might buy myself a colour head soon after reading your darkroom section.

That’s good Vicki, keep the ball rolling send links on to anyone else you can think of, mags, newspapers publishers and the like

PS town council, local museums’ publicity officers … twin towns, you may get another project, never know

I've never had ANY trouble getting into the local papers.

And as soon as I get off probation I might be there again!

Thanks everyone!

I wasn't trying to demean the local press, far from it, I didn't want to appear like I was overplaying things. Without the local press, well the world is a poorer place without it on so many levels. And that includes local community magazines written by dedicated people; those just don't seem to exist any more unless they are full of adverts (and that's if they do exist as I say.)

I have no idea if I have 'success' on my hands, all I know is that I'm able to put together a book that encapsulates this city into a series of photos; something I've always wished to have since my first visits to the city in the mid-80s. (I know bizarre, but we all get very attached to memories one way or another.)

The good thing is that this seems to be encouraged by many of the residents I have been able to work with on folding them into the mix.

One thing I am certain of is that this has been a massive amount of fun, and will continue to be so until the last frame is fired.

As for the next project, I have some ideas. But it won't be a new town. I am interested in them, but due to a lack of emotional attachment (read: happy memories from childhood!) to the likes of Peterborough or Harlow, I think I'd struggle to get a 'feel' to get me started.

But I do have some ideas, I'm going to need a project though, it keeps me sane and gives me something to look out the window wistfully about at work!...
