I like all options. Sometimes you need the heft for that steady shot. Sometimes you need the wimpy lens, for when you've been hauling around that gear all over town for half the day.

I don't like absolutes.

i don't care about the weight, but the size i do. i sold my 50mm Nokton because it just felt too big. my DR Summicron weighs A LOT more but feels much smaller (not as fat) and I prefer it.

my normal carry around now is my M4-P and 35mm 'lux pre-ASPH. doesn't get a lot more compact than that little lens :)

not trying to be a smart ass here, but, do people really know how much their lenses weigh?

I think it depends... If you believe in using one camera/one lens, of course you can carry bigger and heavier lenses or cameras... I'd use the 35 1.2 Nokton then for everyday shooting, and a heavy camera like a Leica M would be fine... But some of us using several bodies and lenses know about our lenses' weight and cameras' weight too... M Leicas are around 600 grams and a bit more, M Bessas weigh as much as Barnacks, around 430 grams, and the Ts (I carry 2) are around 380 grams... So in the end weigh is important, and sometimes even more than size... But it depends on everyone's needs and shooting style... If M Leicas were all the great they are, and also the lightest RFs, then no doubt I would prefer them over my Bessas. The same with lenses: I find hard/impossible to imagine my 15 Heliar - 28 3.5 and 40 1.4 set, in other brand with a smaller/lighter offer in that range, allowing me to do all those lenses do... So, what CV has done is amazing... It's not just about pricing, but about wonderful quality and knowing about real photography and also about RF world before them very well...

Cheers,

Juan

I never think in terms of weight
irs usually about a signature or rather the way the lens draws
with that said I really ADORE 50mm's
then comes a 21 & 35
Those lenses tend to be sensibly sized....:D

I never think about how a lens draws: only about how I draw emotions... I admire photographers for totally different reasons than the lenses they used...

Cheers,

Juan

JUAN: I don't Admire photographers for their Equipment ....:p
its the Photo, the Imagery that draws me in....
with that said
i do think when one buys Gear one has in mind
a 'FEEL' or 'Look' one may want to achieve with that lens
softer / sharper/ with or without flare /vignetting ...etc

Best - H

Hi Helen: I didn't mean you admire photographers because of their lenses... :)

All I cleared was that some of us (just me?) don't care too much about the lens as long as it's a good lens... I wouldn't prefer Nadar's shots of Baudelaire made with another lens... At all! I don't care too much, if I make a portrait, which of my lenses I use: my Leica 90 Summicron or my Nikkor 105 2.5 or my 150 2.8 Sonnar are good enough for me, and I don't care about their small differences: I care about everything else in the portrait... But that's me...

Cheers,

Juan

BTW, I couldn't vote, because my present weight cutoff for the Leica M is the 560 gram 75/1.4; but the voting only went up to 500 grams. :(

i don't care so much for the weight of the lens, just the size. I think the pre aspherical lux's are as big as I want to go, but I have been dying to try out a 90mm lately.

I know that a Noctilux accually weighs more than my 75 Lux. I know that my Leica M with a 75 Lux and even an added Rapidwinder is lighter than my Nikon F3P with 105/1.8 and MD-4 motor drive.

The weight is relative to balance and feel; and to me the number of grams is not important. My 75 Lux on Damaso's M6TTL with TA Rapidwinder feels great with the added weight and balances better making the rig less nose heavy.

I have been known to carry all day two Nikon F3's with motor drives BTW all around NYC, but I now perfer carrying two Leicas instead. Sometimes I still pull out the Nikons to be a tough guy, especially in the summer. LOL.
