the term: Fine Art

Labels. Simply labels geared for those who lack the conviction to decide what art they like.

So Bob, are you a wedding photographer? I'm thinking, no. What kind of photography do you do? I'm thinking social documentary.

Labels convey information.

Frank: my thinking is that it is all about my photographs and not about me. I am meaningless without photographs to represent me in this scenario. So I am happy to just be identified as "the photographer".

Okay, so describe your photography. Let's say that you've struck up a conversation with a gallery owner at a party and he/she expresses interest in your work. What do you tell them?

A Fine Art Photographer asked the gallery curator if there had been any interest in his prints on display.

"I have good news and bad news", the curator replied.

"The good news is that a gentleman inquired about your work and asked if it would appreciate in value after your death. When I told him it would, he bought all of your photographs.

"That's great!", exclaimed the Fine Art Photographer, "So What's the bad news?"

"He was your doctor."

Gallery owner at my "party?" No, dont think so.

"I do lots of things... For money I have worked in fashion and product, but my real passion is author photography, and I have showed my images in a few collective exhibitions... Maybe one of these days I could show you my prints to see if you like them... Which of your gallery exhibitions have you enjoyed the most?"

Cheers,

Juan
