What would you order? (MP a la carte)

I already have two M7's, one with 0,72 and one with 0,58 view finder, both black chrome finish. A black chrome M4-P and two M3's.

So the item of desire is the MP in black paint. I would like to match it with a Summilux 50mm in black paint, some days.

..... and vulkanit leatherette.
By "gather", do you mean that it is still not produced? In that case I would advise that you try handling the standard MP covering, if you haven´t already. When I bought my MP, I was a bit worried about the standard covering because of all the complaints from users here. It turned out that I liked it much better than the modern vulcanite (which is not the same vulcanite that was used on older models).

Hi Mark,

After paying extra to get rid of the engravings, will the "Leica Camera Made In Germany" on the back of the top cover be removed as well?

Cheers

no, the back of the top plate will still be engraved "made in germany" in the exact same place, but "leica camera" will not be present. same thing happens when you get the classic engraving. this is why i prefer the standard mp engraving.

i just found pictures of the mp6 on ebay. this is the only body i've found that doesn't have any engraving on the back of the top plate.

I also use this body along with an MP3. OP: you might want to take a look at a used BP MP3 as an alternative to an a-la-carte. Cheaper for sure.

Sure, I was just thinking the same thing another day, but also looking in to m3 option to go with the older lenses..

I'd go for a standard MP black paint and remove the white paint from the engravings. That's what I'd a-la-carte order anyway so the money I'd save on and a-la-carte would go towards a 50mm Summi. preferably in black paint as well.

I figure the ala carte MP is the reason that God gave me *two* kidneys. I've had it picked out for years:

Just give me a black MP3 (paint or chrome), and I'd be thrilled. As it is, I've got an early M2 alongside my pair of Hexar RFs, and I'm "merely" terribly happy.

.....
What are the differences in look and feel between the old and the "new" vulkanit?
The feel of how much grip you have on the camera. And the same material doesn´t necessarily give the same amount of "grip-feeling" with two different users. I guess it depends on hand-size, finger width and skin texture. That´s my theory, at least.

As previously stated, some MP users here have complained about the new MP covering, and have changed it to the modern Leica vulcanite or similar third-party products. I happen to like the new MP covering better than the modern Vulcanite.

I totally agree with you, i work as a pro photographer with a black MP, the new covering is the best, beautiful, with a good grip.

Griptac

Griptac

Some of us, myself included, find the original Leica MP covering not to our taste, and have replaced it with Griptac. I've had particular problems in very hot and humid climates where I've been sweating profusely and once or twice the camera has slipped from my hand. No problems since the Griptac went on the MP though. :)

The MP3 has the "new" Vulkanit covering, which I also find better than the regular MP covering. All of these are personal preferences so you really need to experience the cover for yourself. I like Griptac the best and if/when the Vulkanit wears on the MP3 I'll replace it with Griptac. Griptac cover in the pic below in case you haven't seen it.

I've done the configurator many tines over, but i always change my mind. Nowadays, I think the black chrome is the best, if a bit postmodern, finish. Covering of course in vulcanite. Engravings I don't mind, so standard mp is fine. I also don't mind the full framelines set, and .72 is fine even though I shoot 28mm a lot. But then I always think, that's just like an m6 :p
I do change my mind a lot on the controls though. M3 style is very sturdy, but m4 style is very practical. I can't decide....so I guess I'm sticking with m6's.

I like the look and durability of black chrome, but I don't like how it "brasses" white instead of yellow. (It's not the underlying metal, but part of the finish.) I also go back and forth with the rewind knob. The angled one is faster and looks cool, but is susceptible to damage because it sticks out. And it's plastic. The brass, old style knob is better.
