Neopan 400

I haven't been around long enough to learn where you live, but if you are in the US, LegacyPro 400 from FreeStyle (http://freestylephoto.biz/) is said-to-be the rebranded Neopan 400 (unfortunately, 135 only). I buy them by several dozens at a time and push to 1600 with good results. :)

I have not found 35mm Neopan 400 scarce at all. B&H and Adorama were out of stock a few years back but everyone else still had it. 120 is hard to find how.

I too use the Freestyle Legacy Pro now. I stocked up and have a refrigerator full.
 
Correct... My friends at Fuji just sent me 200 rolls and you can also find it widely available...

In 35mm format, I haven't found it any harder to find than comparable ISO Kodak or Ilford films. In 120 roll film format, however, Neopan 400 has been discontinued. You still might find some squirreled away on the shelf of a photo supply shop. Keeble & Shuchat had bunches of it as late as a month ago, but were experiencing an end-of-production run on their remaining supplies.

2) Fujifilm Neopan 400 Presto

400 Presto is available at most film / camera shops and the 400CN is a little more difficult to find for sure...

Legacy Pro 400 is so cheap it's ridiculous ... Freestyle currently has a special on short dated twenty roll packs. It works out to $1.75 per 36 exp roll! :eek:

For a classy 400 black and white film like Neopan that's amazing ... it's also a good indication that Freestyle isn't shifting as much of the stuff as they expected to!
 
I beleve the product sold as Neopan 400 Presto in Japan is marketed in the U.S. simply as Neopan 400, or available in short-dated lots rebadged for Freestyle as Legacy Pro 400. The Fujifilm version is commonly available here in U.S. in 35mm, but the pipeline is just about empty for 120 roll film. I don't think there ever was a Legacy Pro version in 120.

I agree, it would help if we knew exactly which film and format OP is asking about.

I can only speak of "Neopan 400" sold in the US, but FreeStyle did have some in 120 (not LegacyPro) when I made an order of about 20 rolls back in Spring. They emailed me that they only had 7 in stock and the rest would be sent in a week from that point. I did get the rest of order shortly after, but looks like the ran out of that stock in no time and now it's not even listed. I think there was a rumor (or actual news) that Fuji stopped making Neopan 400 in 120.
 
I'm a little worried that Fuji's film future may be limited ... Freestyle has been discounting Legacy Pro for some time now!

I would have thought 400 black and white film would be their mainstay but Freestyle's push on it indicates that it's not selling and stocks are obviously pretty large. It's a great film IMO but I suspect that Tri-X (arista premium) out sells it by at least two to one!

I suspect the price discount on Legacy Pro is due to the short expiry date on them. I received 60 rolls of the stuff a month or so ago and they all expire in March 2011. I'm sure Fuji will continue to make film for quite a while.

The detailed analysis of Fujifilm's product base shows that photographic film is a rather insignificant part of the total company. It is like 3% of total revenues as I remember. And declining rapidly. Now that is all film which they refer to as "color photographic film". Fuji b&w film is probably an insignificant part of their insignificant photo film business. So Fuji could quit making b&w film and the impact would be down at the noise level.

While I have shot Neopan 400 almost exclusively for about eight years, I could do with HP5 or Tri-X if it were no longer available.

But surely the short expiry date is caused by the fact that it's been in stock for so long and hasn't shifted!

I am also concerned about Fuji's commitment to film but my friends at Kodak are very committed, trust me on this

I've never doubted that Kodak will still be around when Fuji inevitably move away from film Riccis ... I really like my Neopan but don't count on it being around a long as Tri-X ... or HP5 for that matter!

I was at both of the big two discount camera shops over the last three days and did not see Neopan 400 in 120 format on the shelf. In fact the "shelf" is getting smaller and smaller. Still a good selection, but floor space wise much reduced.

On the other hand every time I stop by, there are 2-3 people buying film... Mostly younger individuals and not all of them are men ;-).

I've never tried more than 1600, but I do push to 1600 most of times as I do to TriX. My guess-meter is calibrated to 1600 so that's my "default" speed. Here are some examples.
