HCB did the same "trick" for 60 years? yes, he did. He made beautiful images, often documenting epocal events and always trying to find harmony between space and time. The difference between HCB and many modern photo "artists", is that it was not necessary for HCB to make 100 wall sized prints of "Behind the Gare St Lazare", to show that this was good stuff. However, if you take a digital colour shot of your water closet, blow it up 2x3 meters, make 100 prints, make up a new "bowel art movement" manifeto, and stage an exhibition on Times Square, you will be surely acclaimed the next "hot" photo artist.

Juan, it appears you are a very lucky guy to attend one of Adams workshop. Based on your comment on "having Adams as your first serious teacher". I am interested to know which "workshop" you attended.
I am guessing 1978-1980?
You ought to share any of the photos produced from that workshop, they should be memorable. Those first 4x5's shot on PN-55 should be proud accomplishments. All the Best

I do like Cindy Sherman, she casts an subtle incantation in her pictures (like Eggleston). I like how her mind communicates.

I was a lot luckier than anyone just attending "a workshop": I read his three books with passion when I was a teenager. He wrote them for me and others... I felt it then... Those books are marvelous. Yet I have them: in english because there was no spanish version back then... A great person. Not too overrated outside the USA, by the way.

Well....I would start with anyone who ever shot for Rolling Stone magazine! I would agree Cindy Sherman,Mapplethorpe,Dennis Stock,Salgado...(way over)Sandy Skoglund,Gerard Malanga, Lucas Samaras,Joel Meyerowitz, and lets don't forget....Dorothea Lange,Susan Meiselas,Annie Leibovitz, Mark Klett or Barbara Kruger and last but not least....Marget Bourke White. Bourke White in an interview was quoted as saying she only went into photography to be famous! That''s my list....and the F/64 group of course!

I could live without Winogrand's work but love what I've seen from Daido Moriyama!

AA and HCB were both pioneers though. Hard to criticise people who cut a new path for others to copy.
My #1 would be Steve McCurry. One amazing shot "Afghan Girl" and then lots of shots that look like decent travel work (but no more) and with many which are formulaic and repetitive. I think with a lifetime of travel, many forum members here would have done as well if not better. His work has no edge, just that generic photographic competency mixed with evident opportunity, unlike the greats whose work have that something individual, as the evident product of an individual; a mind.
