I subscribe, and listen to Brook Jensen's podcast every morning on my Zune, in the subway, on my way to work. Does anyone of the forum members listen to his podcast?

I want to say that I think that there is probably no other photographer that has a passion for the art more than this man.

Have a listen when you get a chance.

Thoughts/opinions?

I have every issue of Lenswork, since #1. It's the only "must have" photographic magazine, in my opinion.

Russ

I listen to it on my Zune as well. I do not keep up on it so I am behind. I tend to only listen to podcasts when I am on a road trip. Gotta change that habit. I like his podcasts because they are short/sweet.

Thanks very much for the link. I listened to some of the podcasts and find them very informative. Brook Jensen distills everything into short nuggets of insight. He reminds me of the master in the Kung Fu tv series.

I have over 600 podcast downloaded to my Zune. Very informative, insightful and even humorous at times.

It seems to me that this man should be honored in some way shape or form. He is an advocate for art photographers and his publication is one of the best in my opinion. He truly does have a passion for this art form that can't help but being contagious.

I guess having listen to so may of the podcast, I feel as though I've come to know him; which I guess isn't to far from the truth. He speaks from the heart about so many things we all think about everyday as photographers.

This is the full collection of Podcast...

Everyone should get an earful :)

I find Brooks Jensen to be a very wise man, and an excellent writer. He is also a master magazine craftsman. My housemate works for a small magazine; I wish I could send her boss to Jensen for an overhaul.

The best part is that they produce Lenswork with a PC and not a Mac. Absolutly unheard of in the publishing industry. And, the mag is unsurpassed in elegance, in my opinion.

I'm sure we all know with absolute certainty that the very most important element of publishing is the choice of computer platform, just as we all know that only the Leica rangefinder can produce good pictures, indeed art.

To that end, I am seeking a grant to marry a PC with a Leica with a little AI and release it to the world, thereby automating photographic art publishing and abolishing the photographer, the editor, and all computer platforms other than the PC.

The publication will always come out on time, and through profound uniformity we will be rid of diverse individuality, once and for all. We shall prevail!

I listen to the podcast, too--it's a good one.

I sent him a little press release/letter about my portfolio, and not only did he look at it, he sent me an audio reply commenting on the photos and, particularly, the layout and graphic design. A good guy, it would seem, and generous with his time.

It is amazing how fast a thread can change from a serious discussion to the 'x is better than z' type in no time. Sorry, could not resist to express my truly felt amazement.

As for lenswork, I have not seen any issues here in Germany, but thanks for sharing the information.

Edit: I just listened to the Podcast LW0072 'Toys or tools'. Cound not agree more.

If I may digress just a bit - do you have to pay a special tax on imported magazines? I should think that LensWork would be appreciated there.

I have only listened to one of Brook's podcasts - where he spoke about doing your best all the time, regardless of having an audience (metioned the BLueGrass guitar player Dan Crary in the articel).

Brooks interviewed me for the current issue (#89 - the Ft. Knox Basic Training photos). We spent about 90 minutes talking about my project, about music and about time managment. I have been a subscriber now for about 4 years and cosider every issue a jewel.

A few years ago wrote a great article (don't recall which issue) - that hit on a subject which really helped me . Pricing photographs. I won't drill into the subject here, but his commentary really brought me around and helped me get a better grip on reality (with regards to pricing prints). Heck of a nice guy, humble and also a talented photographer.

I am not sure, but if you recieve just one issue regularly it should be tax free. Maybe I will have a little chat with the local magazine vendor tomorow.

And you are right, a magazine like that would be a nice addition to the local magazine landscape.

I have heard of it. But that is not the dig. It is Quark or InDesign. I have used both on Macs and PCs and they are both excellent.

Lenswork is subscription only, so far as I know (and I'm a subscriber). That was reportedly a move to eliminate the problems of returns and the amount of expenditure on other parts of the distribution.

Lenswork Extended is a dvd with extra content and both versions are relatively well priced. There is almost always something interesting, though the majority of the portfolios are North American "Art Photography" so can seem a bit repetitive in style, if not in content. Nevertheless, I freely admit I couldn't manage anything as technically well produced as what you see in the magazine/dvd !

Ah, ok, that makes perfectly sense. If one is putting a lot of effort into high quality printing it would be a waste to produce more issues than are actually needed.

Another big issue is distributors - they own your market place. Some magazines make less per issue than their distributors. It's a racket.
