OK I'd like to add a couple of points of information to this thread, there are a lot of things happening on streets that get lumped into Graf... to the artists there is a difference so here goes.. there are ;

• Paste ups
• Stencils
• Tags
• Graffiti

These cover most of the things you see on streets however there are other things happening out there too.

Thanks, that's helpful!

There's an alley in Cambridge, MA that I've stopped by a number of times over the past couple of years. There was a recent article discussing a Shepard Fairey image in the alley, with a short view of the end opening to Massachusetts Avenue (Link: HERE)

Soon after my M4 was CLA'd and I had a new Biogon 35/2.0 I stopped in the alley to expose a few frames. This image with a monster looming behind a panda character was shot at night (1/8 second, F2 and TriX at 400). It was one of my first rolls, and the scanned image was printed at 17x22 on an Epson R3800. Largest print I'd done and the quality blew me away - one of those moments when you get 'hooked'.

Yesterday I stopped by the alley with a friend and it looked lousy. Guess they were just a bunch of poorly done tags. Someone had airbrushed "I will not make boring graffiti" multiple times over one of them. Those images are still on the card.

A man in the alley was watching us as well as a couple photographing themselves against the wall. He is an artist with the handle SP80, specializing in airbrush. He lamented the poor quality of the wall, and how the taggers had violated "the code" of not putting up one's work over that of another unless it is of equal or better quality. He was sad that the couple had such a lousy backdrop for their photos.

Here's a weathered Paste-Up of Shepard Fairey's "Obey" series. South Boston, MA

Sone business owners pay to have this street art done on the side of their store. I am not sure some of it is actually greffiti any more. This is in an abandoned building- Jim

barnwulf, it's interesting how some of this work is "going commercial".

Here are a couple snips of a wall at the Tannery in Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA) with a Shepard Fairey installation.

A friend did a little digging and found this on flickr, showing the mural being put up in October 2008:
Paste-Up at Tannery

Will have to pull up some more of Faireys images from the Boston area. Also have some graffiti from a visit to Montreal this summer.

^^^ Ben B and Joao - wow, those are two very interesting images.

Graffiti is encouraged at the U-Paint Gallery in Black Rock City, NV.

Thanks ederek! I really like this image. I've made others at the same place (next door actually) but, I don't know... Not the same.
