Domke F5XB question

i can't tell from the online illustrations. does the F5XB flap secure with velcro? it does not look like it has a buckle.

also, is there a pocket on the outside back of the bag?

the dimensions of this bag seem ideal for my use. any others close to this size that i should be seriously considering?

thanks!

My F5XB and I are inseparable ... it's the only name brand camera bag I've ever bought and it's hard to imagine anything better made or more understated. The only criticism I've read was about the very heavy duty zip potentially marking delicate surfaces while removing or putting things in the bag but I haven't found that to be an issue!

Flap fastens with Velcro. Main compartment has a zipper and there are two pockets on the front of the bag, covered by the flap when closed. Pity you're so far away as I am about to putting up for sale.

There is no pocket on the outside back, it's a belt loop. There is a pocket on the inside of the flap, but outside the zipper, on the front of the bag.

that is what i needed to know. thanks.

i'm not real thrilled about the zipper but like the other features.

I'm with Keith - it's a great bag. In fact, I liked mine so much, I bought a Domke F-5XA also for times when I need a smaller bag. Both complement each other perfectly, and I treat the F-5XA as my one body bag, and the F-5XB as my two body bag.

Your questions have been answered, but I would like to add that with the F-5XB, there is space in the main compartment between the front of the insert and the body of the bag. I find this perfect for stowing a paperback/ notebook, and is a welcome addition to the pocket at the front.

I like my first one so much I got a second one, and I use either when I'm taking what I call a "small system" with (one body, two lenses, film). The only drawback is that the Velcro makes a kind of loud, crackling noise when you lift the flap... But I can live with that and sometimes I open it slowly to make less noise. This is a very discreet, no-nonsense bag, durable and tough. I have one in khaki and one in black. The khaki has two small pockets that get covered underneath the flap, and a bit of space between the insert and the outside material. The black has only one large (lengthwise) pocket. There is a belt loop, but I've never used it and don't intend to try either.

You will end up buying two... Take care! :)

Exactly what was said here! Also have both versions, one black and one sand color. I have many bags and these two are the best. Only comment about the "belt loop" on the back is that a compact umbrella slides in nicely when heading out in uncertain weather.

When in a quiet environment, I fold the flap under itself so the velcro doesn't make noise.

I also highly recommend the Domke gripper shoulder strap. There are two of the small versions, one without buckles where the wide and narrow part of strap meet - this is the one to get.

I have the bag and camera strap set to relative to one another, such that with the camera out it sits perfectly on top of the bag with a little tension on each strap.

In an environment such as a venue with risk of beer spray/spill, but wanting the camera "ready", will rest the base on top of the open zipper, and flip the flap over the camera for protection.

Re: comments on the velcro, if it's an issue you can always put several strips of velcro over the velcro on the bag. I've considered this, but the noise has never been a factor for me, to actually go out with the bag so

There is one bad point to this bag, if you have hairy arms and wear a t-shirt with this hanging to your side, you will get a constant series of painful moments as your hair gets caught in the metal hook/hoop that holds the strap to the bag...

Just grease your arms whenever you go out taking photos in a t-shirt :D :p

i especially like the F5XB in the brown waxed cotton version, at least in the photos i have seen. i might have to go ahead and bite on one of these.

the think tank retrospective series looks pretty good also, but bigger than what i want.

domke has some add on pouches that attach to the bag's strap and maintain a vertical orientation. one or two of these might be handy for a cell phone or GPS or similar, but domke's are pretty large (must be designed for an extra lens or flash). anyone know of a source for a similarly designed but smaller pouch?
