Anyone use the Zeiss 28 f/2.8 on the Leica M8, M8.2, or M9? I haven't seen a lot about this lens, just a small handful of reviews seem positive though.

I'm thinking about going with it instead of the Leica 28mm Elmarit ASPH for now, I returned my 50mm f/2 Summicron (hopefully getting a refund) and decided to save a little bit of money. I'm curious how it performs wide open and close as well. Portraits with enviroment on my M8 (37mm) is my primary interest, but I would use it in various situations.

Thanks

Yeah I did. It's great. No complaints at all. I wnet the other way and traded it for the 28 Summicron ASPH as I found a second hand one with nearly £1,000 off, and didn't loose much on the Zeiss 28. I think the Summicron 28 is better, not just faster, but for most shots the difference is not noticeable. I still have the Zeiss 21 f2.8 and Zeiss 25 f2 biogon, instead of the Leica equivalents. I am sure they are as good, for most purposes, and half the price if not more. I would have no complaints about the Zeiss 28 and would only hold on to the cron if you thought you could afford it and needed the extra stop.

I use it on film. Its superb in every respect. its high contrast, like the elmarit asph, but anecdotally, quite a few digital shooters seem to prefer the Zeiss rendition.

It's a very good lens. It really is underrated. The only thing that bothers me about it is that it focuses to .5 meters (even though most RF cameras can't) and that makes the focus throw longer than it should be for a 28mm IMO.

I bought one (slightly used) locally a month ago or so and really like it with film, especially BW. It is a good match for the ZM 50 Planar, see my signature. :)

post pics! :p

I was considering this instead of the elmarit asph....but the prices are quite similar and I love the handling of the elmarit...and the fact that it's running the same filter thread as my other lenses! :D (i hope that isn't too ken r0ckwell sounding....)

All of the lenses made by Zeiss, Leica or Cosina Voigtlander are better than the best photographers out there. Do not worry about the wrong thing limiting you.

I have a Zeiss 28mm f2.8. It does excellent. But I shoot film and you asked about M8 and M9.

It was the first lens I purchased. The colours are simply amazing, focussing is very easy and accurate. It lends your photos an amazingly three dimensional feel. I've never tried it on my M3 as I don't have a viewfinder for it...

I really like mine, although it currently needs the focus helicoid re-lubing (as you focus there are a few tight and then very loose areas) and generally tightening up (it wobbles a bit). Still taking nice pics, but not very nice to use until I send it off for a service.

I don't have anything close and wide-open on Flickr but as Bob Micheals said - it's better than me and most anyone else.

Also, there is no visible focus-shift at any aperture / distance (as opposed to the CVs).

Hi, if 28mm is your stuff don´t hesitate and buy it.

It´s superb, sharp from 2.8 on!
Nice looking, built very well, not expensive
Can´t tell anytihing about the elmait.

I used it a lot on my late m8 to get 37mm fov.
Had to sell it for new gear (m9)
Also i don´t like 28 too much...

Some valparaiso shots last summer (february)

bye and luck!

Not that I am at all unhappy with my tiny 28 Skopar, if I get a hankering for a bit faster lens, how is the flare resistance and viewfinder blockage on a .72 body with the ZM?
