lenses for nikon f4s

At what F stop?

At all F-stops.

In S and P modes the F4 chooses the aperture and you need to set your AF lens to the minimum aperture and leave it there. G lenses are really just D lenses with the aperture ring stuck on the smallest value so they work in these modes.

I sold most of my nikon af lenses just kept three 20-35 F2.8 35-70 F2.8 and 70-210 F4 all similar vintage two the F4.

My picks for budget primes:
105 2.5 (any version, they're all the same)
50 1.8 series E (criminally underrated, fantastically cheap)
28 2.8 AI (underrated because of the highly regarded ais)

the next level:
50 1.2 AIS (favorite lens, any system)
35 1.4
180 2.8 - image quality out of this world

If you like wides then the Sigma 20mm, 24mm, and 28mm f/1.8, all offer an excellent combination of price and performance (and they're all entire too).

things now on my photo radar:
good nikon sb-??? flash
a good slave system,
an umbrella flash slave kit
a bracket for off camera flash
flash filters...

a quantity of good cheap older / period nikon lenses

the nikon eyepiece cup
the hove magic lantern f4 book

certainly a slippery slope...

The SB-24 was the 'period' flash for the F4 but any of the later models will work up to the SB-800 ( I use the SB-800 and an SB-25). I think support for the film TTL cameras was dropped with the SB-900 and later flashes.
