Unfortunately they've taken it down now, so it must have been sold, but a UK camera shop last night had a black M3 for sale - a repainted chrome one, not an original, for £677.

It didn't provide details of who re-painted it but from the photos they had on the website it looked of good quality.

www.cameraworld.co.uk was the site, but as I say it's not there now.

Other UK vendors seem to sell standard chrome M3s for around that price, so it seems there's little premium for a painted one.

Is this typical?

Typically a non-original black paint M3 sells for between £1000 - £1500 from dealers such as this one:

I've seen a few starting to filter into dealers, but when I've enquired as to where and by whom the painting was done, they either don't know or won't say! I have a sneaking suspicion that some of these may be coming in from outside the UK, and I personally wouldn't purchase one at those prices unless the work had been carried out by either Malcolm Taylor or Peter at CRR Luton.

The prices, as one might guess, depend on the reputation for quality and processing time by the painter. If it takes forever but there is reputation of good quality, expect to pay a bit more if you wish to buy it that day - you're buying the time.

The Dutch dealer Schouten, who tend to be in the top end price-wise generally, has this one on offer at the mo'.

French-camera.com has one for a much better deal but which looks absolutely horrible.

That Schouten Select camera has been on sale for at least a year. It's unlikely it will sell at all for that price or some non-EU buyer would have picked it up already (EU buyers have to pay add. 18% taxes).

Seems that price is a bit unrealistic.

I'm still happy as can be with my spare-parts black Paint M3 DS, especially when seeing rpices like that. Took me some time but I sure did not pay that much for a black M3!

These cameras are a bit of a lottery unless they state categorically that the chrome plating has been removed before painting. So I wouldn't buy one from a dealer that doesn't know for sure, given the only way to find out is to scratch it.

I'll go with John's repainted M3 if he has one over these horrendous priced repainted M3's you guys posted. He sells his repainted camera's far more cheaper than this repainted M3's. I don't know what's behind these cameras that they are being sold at a very high price.

Yep, I agree Johan. It is an unrealistic price. But in the wacky world of Leica I'm sure someone will eventually pick it up :)

I'm returning my chrome M3 to Tamarkin. Eventually I'll get a real usergrade M3 and have it repainted by Shintaro or someone.

But for now I'm happy with the M6TTL BP.

That one at french camera has to be someone havin' a laugh. €1490 and it has just been painted black over the chrome! I don't mind paint wear but when it looks like this it's awfull.
