New York Big/Special June Meet-Up

So, I found a place to stay for the week and I'm definitely going to be at the Mermaid Parade.
That said, I have a few days to kill starting tomorrow and if anyone wants to do a photo death march or two with me, I'm going to be exploring some new territory. I'm staying in Astoria, so I figure I'll just walk south shooting all the way.
Cal, you have my number. Anyone else want it, send me a PM.

Phil Forrest

Phil,

A group of us are meeting at 7:00AM Saturday at 59th and Lex to take the subway ride together. Are you able to join us?

If not, and for everyone else, I found the place to eventually hang out is in the staging area.

Cal

Are you taking the N down to Coney Island? I'm going to be getting on the N at 30th Ave in Astoria so I'll be going right through there. I can get off the train and meet you all in the station at 59th St. then head down with the group.

It would be cool to herd up at 59th and Lex. That local subway ride on the weekend takes close to an hour.

So far its Stephen, John, you and me.

My friend Chris, from Brooklyn said he's going to try to make it but he'll probably go straight there instead of backtracking into the city to meet us.
Jim (Thambar) said he's going to make it, weather permitting.

Awesome, We can all group up near the staging area before the beginning of the parade.

CALZONE ALERT: Look for a tall skinny Chinese guy with a ponytail and an arrogant chin beard. He''l be disguised as a wealthy Japanese tourist sporting a silk Tommy Bahama Hawian shirt, Mauai Jim sun glasses and likely carrying a Fuji GM670 and a massive Pentax 67II.

JOHN ALERT: Look for a big whit guy with a shaved head and glasses sporting a tiny camera. High probability a Leica X2.

Nope, it'll be a Fuji X-Pro1 day for me I believe. Well, I guess I could put the X2 in my pocket.

Any chance we could meet up at
Broadway-Lafayette Street / Houston Street?
Maybe just stick your head out of the train and yell for me.

Pentax 6x7 for me. I might ditch the leica ("gasp") and go with a DSLR as backup for when i run out of film.

I have a freezer full of B&W 120 film. I'll have mucho Tri-X, but I only have about 30 rolls of Arcos. I realize that momentarily there is an Arcos shortage. Also I'll likely kill two stops of light or more with either a yellow 2X, an orange 3X or by using a polorizer as a ND filter for two stops shooting Tri-X for B&W.

Also I'll be shooting Velvia 50 in 220 (4 rolls) and Kodak E100VS (4 rolls). If you need me to front you some 120 I have a bit of a stockpile, just let me know how much to bring.

I got a big KEH order in last night and now my P67II is all pimped out with hoods and an AE prism. The metering is amazing. Also got a LN waist level VF'er that has a magnifier. Now I need a screen with a grid.

Any day now I'll likely get my GM670 back from Nippon service. This will be my second 6x7 camera.

Some Acros would be nice Cal. I'll leave it up to you how much. It's back-ordered everywhere (i hope fuji isn't discontinuing it). I have a few reels of portra 400 and some Pan F plus. I think tri-x would be a little too much speed considering it'll be sunny (right??) especially with the speed boost with diafine. Plus i very rarely stop down any of my lenses and like to shoot wideopen most of the time.

Tri-X is almost as fine grain (meaning no grain) as Arcos, but it does not have the punchy contrast of Arcos. I too plan on shoot wide open with the 105/2.4 but filters will be used to add contrast and in a pinch a thin Nikon polorizer can kill two stops of light. By adding/combining a yellow filter with the polarizer I can kill 3 stops. 650 is my base ISO for Tri-X, minus 3 stops gives me 80 and I have a lot of contrast control. No photoshop for me.

On my Fuji GM670 I'll have a 100/3.5. I call this lens "The King Of The Tessars." Its a real old school look, single coated, but has this wonderful OOF and beautiful bokeh especially if shot wide open and close focused. Very painterly. I shot a lot of work with this lens in 6x9 on my GL690, but in 6x7 the FOV equiv is more like a 50 rather than 40 in 6x9. I figure the creamy OOF and Bokeh will get even more exagerated.

I can lend you 15 rolls of Arcos if you need it. I'll reserve the other 15 for my Fuji. I figure this old rig could use the extra contrast provided by Arcos.

BTW Arcos in Diafine shot at box speed is almost as good as sex when developed in Diafine. Negatives are kinda perfect and look large format big time.

Awesome Cal. And yes i agree about the diafine. I developed a roll from this weekend last night and it just blew me away. The tones and grain looks better to me than my scanned 4x5 fp4 negs. Amazing....

Just make sure you are there waiting Arri... :)

We'll be grouping up at 7:00 AM at 59th and Lex. I'll PM you my cell. We can call you when we board the train. Just call my cell phone right away so I have your number. This way one of our techno-nerds can locate it for me. :bang:

This way we minimize your chances of getting mugged on the subway waiting for us.
