I know you were referring more to the fact that is out of the way than for the quality of place but, for me, it's one of my favorite spots in NYC to capture "real" new yorkers in a more relaxed state. Definitely worth it. Just avoid the cliches.

If you go to Coney Island, be sure to go to Brighton Beach at the eastern end of the boardwalk. Heavily Russian neighborhood. Stay for dinner and eat at the Primorski.

My old girlfriend and I shared a table with two Russian gentlemen there one night. We got friendly, shared lots of vodka and food. They danced with my girlfriend. There was a great band there that night. They turned out to be "gangsters". They showed us their guns. "No pictures please." And they ended up paying for the whole dinner. A great New York City moment!
 
I would recommend going to some of the shady neighborhoods - Brownsville, East New York, East Bushwick, South Bronx.

Are they dangerous? Sometimes. But they aren't photographed that often and you can really push yourself by being outside of your comfort zone.
 
go to timesquare.. we don't like your tourist kind around here and we don't want you to discover our hidden spots...
 
back when i was living in brooklyn heights last year i went on a jog during the afternoon like any other day..

this time there were a ton of slow walking in the middle of the path kinda tourists and i was trying to jog at the brooklyn bridge. 5 plus people with their clunky dslrs used there flash right in my eye while jogging during a sunny afternoon. 6th guy did that to me , grabbed his dslr and told him "do you want me to trash your camera?" i can't stand tourists when they are so obstrusive and think no one is walking near them and they just do random stops in the middle of a busy walking path..

i have no problem with them if they don't block people's walking ways and do random stops in crowded places , or walk like half a sleep

If you're able to make a compelling frame you should be able to do it when a dozen others are looking at the same thing. Its not whats in front of you that makes the best frame.

Not likely bringing a DSLR mate, still debating it honestly, but I'm planning on only having film, plus not thinking of visiting as a tourist, planning on visiting as a street photographer
 
Tourists are annoying, but everyone is an annoying tourist somewhere eventually...unless you don't travel. Live and let live.
 
Let's steer this conversation away from angst against tourists...

I live in Brooklyn and am fortunate not to have too many tourists in my neighborhood. But I work in Mid-Town and admittedly get annoyed with tourists... but when I travel I absolutely love being a tourist (what I would give for another trip to Southeastern Asia...). So let others travel and have fun with their tourism. Nothing wrong with that.

Scott - just bring the Leica. You'll appreciate it more. When are you coming? I am the organizer of a lot of meetup groups. Give me your dates and we can do some shooting.

yeah bring a leica. Try not to walk slowly in the middle of a crowded sidewalk and don't make random stops in the middle of a crowded sidewalk.Then you're gold. I just can't stand when i am trying to get to places and these morons keep blocking my path..

check out highline when you are here...at the end of the day anywhere in the village is nice, there is always something happening , small moments to capture..

Thanks Dennis! I will keep the middle of the sidewalk to the people trying to get to and from work. Believe me, it's not horrible in Vancouver, but shooting today I had to walk on the road in several spots. I can only imagine that amplified by 10x more people.

Small moments in the big city is a dream I have been having ever since I started looking at photogs work. Can you PM me your personal links? Would like to check out your take on the city.
 
rent is fine with me. This is the financial/cultural capital of the world. New small business models are first found here. I don't pay for an automobile , all though i do have a nice merc left at my parents garage , nor for gas. And no we don't want you suburban walmartians here so thank you rent prices!
