Great Example of what Poor Ebay Headings get you

I think the idea behind the original post is that the majority of people looking for Nikon RF gear on EBay start their search by typing "nikon rangefinder" and then desregarding all those hunting/outdoor apparatuses that also pop up.

"Nikon M one of 1643 produced in 1949 50mm f/2 lens w/Orion adaptor" would have fit under the character limit and been a more productive title. I just believe the whole "rangefinder" issue to be less important than other information implying more value.

However all this is secondary to the fact that the seller got the price he wanted. He stated that desired price when he paid more for his listing to use a high starting price.

It should also be noted that Mopsy has over 14 years of eBay activity and 1500 transactions. I doubt if few on this forum could show him a better way to title a listing, considering what I saw by wandering through his feedback. I'd be grinning widely at the suggestions posted in this thread.

it really funny to read your insisting how right you are
about an ebay heading that undoubtedly cost the seller money
grinning? hardly
LOL

I have also had luck with hand tools by mis-spelling words, instead of Lie-Nielsen, I would look under Lie-Neilsen or other variations

The price for the Orion  ... well that was a good find for the lucky guy who bought it.

I had a good deal myself for Christmas on a "Hasselblad 100f" : 286$ with shipping from the US, I saw junked 'Blads selling for more than that. Slow speed sticking a bit, back is stuck, chrome not perfect but with a clean lens and shutter looks good too! Costly typo for the seller, he could have sold it for 100-200$ more.

This reminds me of an auction I once spotted that labeled a Leica M as an SLR. Ouch.
At least the rest of the description seemed halfway correct.

ebay

the problem that I'm seeing with a number of auctions is the ebay catalog that they are requiring for certain categories, if you list in film cameras or lenses, not vintage, you have to link it to their catalog. that someone who know absolutely nothing about the camera or lens you are listing, and you have to use it. like listing a Kodak retina iiic. eBay makes you list it as a "point and shoot camera" or a 2.8cm nikkor rangefinder lens, they want you to list it as a 28mm SLR lens. (if you want to put it in the lens category), or you have to move it to the Vintage lens category.

Is it more than "Lecia" cameras?

In the past I found excellent bargains, thanks to seller's lack of attention to spelling detail.

Yes, quantity ensures a fluke never ever ever ever ever happens.

Once students get to college, they have years of experience in test-taking, and the numbers game assures them that once they start setting that pencil down, the answers just flow accurately and naturally, without a zero chance of ever ever making a mistake. ;)

The seller also forgot to mention the 5cm/1.4 that was on the camera, his description is of a two-lens kit instead of a three-lens kit. Anyone knowledgeable enough will have spotted the third lens for what it is, but still.

The biggest mistake was to misspell NIKON and type in NIKKON instead.

Also, excluding foreign non-US bids reduced his chances immensely to make some money from the sale.

Congrats to James for spotting this auction.

hmm. do you think RANGEFINDER might have helped in the title to get more bids ?

No, maybe not. I never search for "rangefinder"... I search under model and type. Then again, I'm not fishing for deals on just any camera.

How much of a deal did the buyer get?

guy listed this for $8, no buy it now, got a quick offer sold $100,
and took it, oooooooppppppppssssssss!

i an imagine the seller thinking "wtf, i got hundred bucks for a piece of bent sheet metal!" and picks his payment up happily.
Seller happy, buyer happy, ebay happy, whats the prob?:D

I think anybody (sorrt Stephen) making fun of such sales/sellers is just simply having a bitter feeling that it wasn't him who had the lucky chance.
Happens to me too :D

ps: just few weeks ago i went to a flea market with a friend of mine who has a pentax slr system. He stumbled upon a tamron sp 90/2.8 macro which is very highly regarded in the slr macro world...
The lens looked totally new and was under a pile of overused, sticky oly om glass.
He was strongly hesitating about it - i convinced him to get it and if he doesnt like it i take it off his hands.
Turned out it costs him only 10 bucks... :)) well, alas he likes it.

In this vein, I chanced on a listing for "Lowe Pro Bag with camera and lenses." Listing photo showed the bag.

The "camera" was a Contax RTS and the lenses were a Zeiss 50 f/1.7 (!) and a Yashica ML 55mm f/2.8 Macro lens (rare, still valuable, and something I was looking for). Lenses in excellent shape!
