fuji x100s...who's getting one?

I decided to see what all the fuss is about - I have a seven day rental scheduled for the middle of May to try one of these out. I figure it's money well spent to determine whether an X100s would work for me or not - I really don't like the idea of buying one and returning it if I don't like it.

However, even if I do like it I would wait for a black version to become available before buying…

I just got mine from amazon!

First thing that I noticed when using manual focus...if you wanted to, you could shoot this as a manual focus only camera. They've really improved it that much. Wheras the X100 was unusable pretty much, the X100S is just about perfect.

I agree, the MF on this camera is certainly an option and it's nice to actually get results when turning the focus ring. Not that it's a big deal, but I wish they only had one tab on the aperture ring so it doesn't get in the way of messing with the focus ring.

the camera store sent me an email yesterday afternoon saying that my X100s finally arrived, there were 6 more X100s reserved for others when I came in an hour after I received the email.

my conclusion is that it feels and looks the same as the X100, was it worth the extra 700$ on top of my old X100? At this point, I can't honestly say but so far I'm happy with the results.
AF feels better and more accurate, I love how I can focus in OVF mode 2-3ft away from the object.
split-image and peaking mode, I guess I won't be using them much as they are for EVF mode only.

ISO800, JPEG, all standard settings, 400% DR, f2

i think you guys are brave buying a Fuji 1.0 product, it seems like the fuji quirks are rearing their head again... but i think it's great that you're all posting your feedback here!

These days I wonder if it is not so much different if u substitute Fuji name for brand xxxx. With the expectation of something better every year product test cycles are coming down including outside beta test trial time.. With the Internet blogs and forums posting updates versus the trolls, I wonder how many products come thru the 1.0 period unscathed.

I am constantly blown away by what digital photographers argue over...

Yeah, I hear you... the damn internet is to blame. When I was using a Leica M in the 90s, I didn't know anyone else who was. I didn't know any better about all of it's short comings, I just used it and figured out things over time. Now, with digital and the internet, you immediately know a cameras short comings right down to the minutest of details ...and why it is inferior to camera A and camera B. Silly camera testing and 100% crops. Sure, I'm not completely immune, but if you search hard enough on the internet, you can find people who say the same camera model is the worst and the best.

Totally agree, and of course I am guilty of this. Need to stop the madness!

The arguments over autofocus speeds for a 23 mm lens are just kinda funny to me. If you are on the street at day time, why on earth are you using AF. Just shoot at f/8 or 11 and scale focus. You should hardly ever have to adjust focus.

If another review post a street shot that they miss and say they are sending the camera back, they should have their photographer license revoked. You have a camera that can produce super clean files at high ISO, I can imagine its pretty easy to shoot around 1/250 or 1/500 at f/11 at day time........

So the reports about autofocus do nothing to temper my desire.

Well, I get what you mean, but in NYC... there is a huge range of lights and darks in the streets due to time of year and position of the sun and the large high buildings. You can easily not be anywhere near f/8 or f/11 in the winter on most streets.

We don't all like shooting at f/8 or f/11 :)

AF is certainly faster than the x100 on fw 1.01. Not sure what people are expecting, but this camera is an improvement in so many ways.

I think some are still expecting dslr af speed... So they can use it for taking a picture of the kids running around (probably could be a challenge even w/ dslr lol) for example Or they just need something to complain about. I agree w/ u, it has improved a lot.

Just got one....

Just got one....

Im just home from work.. Picked up the X100s at lunchtime. I am charging the batteries now.
I never had a non S version so I cant comment. My last compact digital was a nikon P6000, the viewfinder gave up (doesnt zoom with the lens anymore) a long time ago.
Looking forward to trying it out over the w/e.

Gary -

You are on to something... The xe w 27 pancake might just be it.

OTOH, the x100(s or not) is perfect in the pocket and is truly silent for certain occasions where any sound would be a problem...

for small and silent, the sony rx100 is great and truly pocketable.

i am very much looking forward to the 27 pancake...it's about the only thing that's keeping me from buying the 100s...
